I should have already read this, but struggled one summer to get through Portrait of an Artist and have since avoided Joyce.
Magic: I finished that famous passage at the end of "The Dead" just as snow began to fall outside my window: “It had begun to snow again. He watched sleepily the flakes, silver and dark, falling obliquely against the lamplight. The time had come for him to set out on his journey westward. Yes, the newspapers were right, snow was general all over Ireland. ...more

I've been reading this book out loud in a very odd assortment of voices and with various accents and at times very loudly, almost screaming things like, "The evening deepend in the avenue." !!!!!
It's great fun. I should be done in a few days at the rate I'm going, though I'm not sure that I will finish. My neighbors are starting to complain. They must not be Joyce fans. I only got this book because I thought it was written by Jim Joyce the Baseball umpire. Turns out there was another ...more

Beautiful, tight stories. Really remarkable. It's not really all that more accessible than his other material, just based off of how 'normal' the stories are; not even meaning 'literary' normal, like Dickens, but 'life' normal, as in these could happen at anytime anywhere and we'd pass them by without blinking. But that's at least part of Joyce's point. Changed my life in a few ways. Don't just skip to The Dead, read the whole thing!

curious--just got to "Two Gallants". I don't remember reading this in high school... gee, I wonder why not? Prostitution, thievery, betrayal, this has it all. Apparently it wasn't in the very original collection, but was added later by Joyce.
Actually, there are some other stories in here that I apparently never read, either, so I look forward to some surprises.

some of these stories will haunt you the rest of your life, some of 'em you won't care about while you read them or afterward. The high school reading list classics are pretty solid-- araby and the dead, three sisters, A Little Cloud is one that doesn't get assigned in classes but one that I still really like.

I am coming back to this. I just wasn't in the right frame of mind to read something as intricate. On a positive note, this is the first Joyce that I've enjoyed. A year ago I struggled to get into Portrait of the Artist and eventually abandoned it. With Dubliners, I'm hoping for the best.

So far I've only read "The Sisters", "The Boarding House" and "The Dead" for school. As such I do not feel like I can say that I have fully read this praticular piece of work and am not ready to judge it. I will probubly read it in it's entirety another day. (Sept 20, 2008)

out of print for a while, but worth picking up if you can find it. The annotations are thorough, judiciously applied, and often witty and sarcastic. Each story has an introductory note and a concluding essay. Plus them period photographs are top-notch.

These stories are nearly perfect in form and tone. Joyce's characters feel so full and real and their flaws are so recognizable. I never grow tired of returning to this book.

I read it in Penguin Paperback. What can anyone say about this book? Urban paralysis. Ennui. Sense of total frustration in search of ideal beauty. A search for identity.

I read this book a long time ago, I don't remember much of it, but since I have long wanted to read all of Joyce, it is on my list of books read.

I will admit, I started reading this because of its mention in "Crimes and Misdemeanors." I will also admit I started reading this about six years ago.

Still reading it. A very intersting and provocative insight into the life of the turn of the Twentieth century in Dublin, Ireland.

I feel Joyce is always best read in a rainy, cold climate. How convenient that I happen to be enjoying just such conditions.
