Johnny Riles is a lonesome-as-hell rancher, and now someone's murdered his horse. He spends his days searching for the killer, for the soul of his obnoxious professional basketball player of a brother, and for a woman with whom he can share coffee in the morning. He spends his nights getting drunk, which complicates things, of course.

Bypassing convention, The Lonesome Tri

Words that come to mind about "The Lonesome Trials of Johnny Riles:" raw, untamed, gritty, bold, fantastic (in all its forms), spirited, lively and slightly, wonderfully crazy.

"The Lonesome Trials of Johnny Riles" is unforgettable. When you see that title some years down the road you’ll think, “oh yeah, Johnny, I wonder how he’s getting along?” You’ll remember Johnny and what he’s been through. You’ll wonder about his brother. You’ll certainly remember when Johnny was last spotted, getting down

Published in 2015 and set in 1976, Gregory Hill's book nicely captures the feel of an era, where the authenticity and hardships of the rural Colorado landscape meet the decadence of big league ABA basketball. (Remember the ABA?)

But the real landscapes of interest here are interior and psychological. Johnny Riles is a modern day cowboy rancher who drinks unimaginable quantities of whiskey as he manages a shamble of a ranch on the Eastern Colorado plain. The ranch became his after his parents ret

I've lived in the community that Dorsey and Keaton is based on, so it's fun to read events happening in a setting where I can picture the entire background of the scene. Hill's books start out in that familiar landscape, but then spin, slowly at first, but faster toward the end, into a magic-realistic world that captures the reality of the characters lives in a way that mile-roads and sagebrush can't.

This new Western, taking place between Colorado's eastern plains and the big city of Denver, is realistically and brutally gritty. The land is harsh to Johnny, he is hard on himself, and his family doesn't help any either. The book moves from ironic humor to sudden violence and long suffering, and the whole is tinged with mystery and unexpected magic. I liked it more than I expected to.

I really fell for poor Johnny, alone on his ranch while his younger brother enjoys the high life as a professional basketball player. Unfortunately, the ending was a deal-breaker. I don't require a happy ending to enjoy a book, but this really left me hanging. Thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for access to the digital ARC.

A bust in the gut adventure. Excellent characterization and a real sense of place. Eloquent yet cool. Loved the 70's touches such as the ABA (Basketball) and America (Horse with No Name.)Never would have guessed the ending.
