Civil War related.

From Mexican War, to San Francisco bankcrupt, to New Orleans superintendant for schools, to being 50% Sherman/Grant combo for winning civil war. Brother was Ohio U.S. Senator. Not particularly opposed to slavery, but opposed to breaking up the Union.

Refused to run for Prez after Grant's 2 terms. "If nominated I will not run and if elected I will not serve." ("Shermanesque statements" dropped by Paul Ryan Speaker of the House when asked if he'd run for Prez)

William Tecumseh Sherman was an American soldier, businessman, educator, and author. He served as a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–65), for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the "scorched earth" policies that he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States. ...more
