This book is entirely worth keeping around to consult for every time you get one of those burning metaphysical questions in your day-to-day life. It's for those moments when you can't seem to get the question - "what would Kant do?" out of your mind. Magee takes you from the Greeks past William James and into the future.

recommends it for: Everyone
Bryan Magee writes an interesting, easy to digest treatise on the history of philosophy. Most of the major players get at least a few paragraphs in this lushly illustrated volume.

I recommend it for hard core philosophers and those just beginning their journey as well.

Read in August, 2008
recommends it for: anyone starting out in or wanting a light review of western philosophy
Exactly what I was looking for: a general overview of western philosophers and movements. Occasionally more heavy on the biography than the philosophy, but gave me what I needed to get back into the game and decide which (western) philosophers I want to read next.
