This beautifully produced winner of the Tupelo Snowbound Chapbook series (2007) is at once delicate and ferocious...The primarily lyric poems are laced with stunning images (of desire, of loss) that sear: "Sun tossed like coins across the bed,/and the glittering of birdsong, breeze/the cool blue of his eyes." (Greed) or, "Whose one white note is feast enough/for all the throats of dusk" (Whose Hunger0

There is a careful attention to the music in poems that are quietly formal and sound is primary.

I am admittedly biased when it comes to the poetry of Cecilia Woloch. She's been a friend for years and one of my mentors, but since it's my blog and Narcissus ($9.95, Tupelo Press) is one of the best books of poetry published in 2008, I'm recommending you buy this book immediately. Narcissus won Tupelo's Snowbound Series Chapbook Award and was selected by Marie Howe, who knows a thing or two about good poetry. Cecilia Woloch is the author of five collections of poems, most recently Carpathia, from BOA Editions Ltd. She is the recipient of an NEA Fellowship and is currently a lecturer in the creative writing program at the University of Southern California, as well as the founding director of The Paris Poetry Workshop.
