2016 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: In Pain by Caethes Faron
1) An interesting take on a dystopian society. Will and Mal are two halves of a whole who fight for each other more than for themselves. My only complaint is that I have to wait for book 3.
2) An imaginative take on a caste system, this story contains surprising events along with heartache.

Caethes Faron's "In Pain" is the second tale in the In Distress series. This is a M/M sci/fi romance. The future presented has humans in a caste system of Alphas, Betas, and Zeds. Somewhat similar to A Brave New World, Gattaca, and Elysium in the way that the castes play out. Again, Caethes has created a masterpiece. A really good #2, with lots of twists, turns, and heartbreak. The story line is totally in the forefront, but the nookie scenes are yummy and dominatey and perfectly complement the ...more

I am fascinated by this world Faron created. I'm rooting for the Zeds. But I have so many questions now. I don't know if they'll be addressed in upcoming books. I hope so because that would make it a more rounded out story.

This one felt a bit slower than the 1st book. That's typical with sophomore books in a series so I'm not worried. My only worry is how long I'll have to wait for the next one. :-)

I enjoyed continuing getting to know the boys. Parts of this were painful for me to read, but all in all, I enjoyed it. Somewhat harder to get into it than the predecessor, I guess I liked the first one so well it'd be hard to top it. I enjoyed getting to know the supporting characters deeper and liked the maturity and growth of Will.

Back in the futuristic, post-apocalyptic world of New Cali, we find Malcolm and his Zeds deep in a conspiracy to topple the status quo when tragedy strikes at the heart of their little family. Reeling from grief, Malcolm loses direction until Will gets him back on track.

Although the writing is technically good, there is something elusive that keeps this from being a great story.
