Great book for all the basics. Especially with the addition of hilarious cartoons modeling ski moves and how to winter camp. Great book for someone who has been in the backcountry but has no real expertise. I can't wait to pull a sled to my snow cave after a long day of skiing. 4 stars doesn't mean this is great literature (usually 4 stars is a high bar). In this case, it's a great manual for backcountry skiing. Tons of totally useful tips I wouldn't have thought of otherwise, and great illistrated how-tos for snow camping. Built my first quinzee (snowcave) from its instructions...

I love this book for the illustrations and the best idea ever: putting freezing hands on your ski partner's warm belly to keep yourself from getting frostbite--even if you are in no way in danger of getting frostbite, but just want to strike terror into your ski partner's heart :) Mm terror.
Another outstanding book by Mike and Allen! If you're preparing for a NOLS course or want to make an extended stay in the backcountry, this is the best book to get. Tips and tricks that will markedly improve your safety and quality of life out there!

Great! Good tips on Telemark and backcountry travel. Good backcountry addition to their Tele book.
I also love this book almost as much as the Telemark Tips book. Again, this is a cartoon book that is hilarious but also has useful tips for skiing and camping in the backcountry. In fact, this is how I learned to build a quinzhee snow shelter.
pretty good set of trips and tricks, but very basic. just about as good to go out and do it yourself!
