I really enjoyed this story, and like some other reviewers wasn't overly impressed by the illustrations. But once the story of Roger's determination to see the fox got rolling, the illustrations lost that initially-weak quality and kept up, maybe because they do a good job of capturing the emotional undercurrent of the story (Roger hanging his head, confidently skiing down the hill, hopefully looking out his bedroom window, looking down from a hilltop over the surrounding countryside). Another in the category of "I really liked the story, but the illustrations weren't as good as the story". I liked the book overall, and some of the illustrations were nice, but mostly pretty bland. But the story is nice, and it was fun to read. One of the Caldecott books that I have owned for many years, and never got around to reading, so thanks to #nerdcott for getting me to read it.

This is the story of a boy named Roger who longs to see a fox. It is another situation where the illustrations are good, but the story is rather dull.
