Lyrically descriptive, the book takes you to an unfamiliar land that gradually becomes more and more real. I was fascinated not only by the flooded plain of reeds, the taxing lives of the river fishermen, the intriguing preparation of fish and food, but also by the religious beliefs and the beliefs in spirits and ghosts.

This is almost a coming of age story as much as an odyssey, and a story of a young man's unholy pilgrimage to seek retribution for the wrong done to the young woman, his cousin.

3.5 stars. "The Demon Who Peddled Longing" is the story of Nam, a nineteen year old boy who is in the middle of a journey that will take him all over Vietnam. He is looking for two brothers who raped his cousin. This journey will change him and will take him to meet people he may never have come across otherwise. Each character is struggling with something. These characters will force him to look into himself and to decide the kind of person that he will become. This is the second book that I ...more

Following the story of a nineteen-year-old boy and his journey in search of the two brothers who abused and killed his cousin, The Demon Who Peddled Longing, set in post-war Vietnam, is a remarkable novel that offers readers a unique literary experience. Nam’s individuality is constructed by author Khanh Ha in a fascinating manner, from the first lines of the book to the very last ones. What started as a quest to find the two brothers turns into a quest for finding his true self and the true ...more

ust the title of this one had me wondering what I was getting myself into, but I ended up loving the story of Nam, who is 19 years old and wants nothing more than to avenge his cousin’s rape and murder. The subject is definitely touchy with many, myself included. I loved that that book was set in the post-Vietnam era. I am one for historical settings. Nam and all of the characters that you meet throughout this novel have been hurt in some way or other whether physically or emotionally.

The story

Author Khanh Ha returns with his second novel, The Demon Who Peddled Longing, exploring issues of love and lust, passions run wild, and the tragedy of rape.

The Demon Who Peddled Longing by Khanh Ha is set in post-war Vietnam when a country is still plagued by Khmer Rouge pirates, thefts, rapes, and other devastation. Nam is a 19-year-old young man striving to avenge the death of his cousin after she is found naked, raped, and killed in the canals of his town after disappearing one evening. His life was once simple, and this loss, along with the loss of his uncle shortly afterward, has left a deep emptiness in him. Adrift in the Plain of Reeds, Nam ...more

In my faith, we call them "Devils of the sixth heaven," and they are plentiful in Khanh Ha's book which reminded me of a Chinese movie called "To Live" about the misfortunes of a young rake hell, and how each misfortune ended up being a blessing in disguise. Khanh Ha's imagery is always beautiful and liquid, and his descriptions of the life of the people on the river are lingering and true without being sentimental. The realism of The Demon Who Peddled Longing was a refreshing change from the ...more

This was an interesting read. I was taken through a journey into Nam's head and through his life. His love, his need for revenge and his persona growth is all in this story. It is set after a war, and even that contributes to who Nam is. The title is appropriate and I enjoyed common conversations and language that the characters shared. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.

This is quite simply a beautifully written book that taps into the deepest reaches of the imagination. The prose are eloquent, the characters are sublime and it deserves to be topping best seller lists.

This is the second book I have read by this author, and indeed his writing did not disappoint. You can always expect a poignant story with no frills. The author always provides a realistic story with all the harshness and brutality of raw humanity. There is never a dull moment in his books.

For me, his writing style is a bit rough. That fits the stories he tells well, but sometimes the style is a bit too stark for me. That is purely and opinion. Sensitive readers will be bombarded with profanity

This is the sort of novel that I can appreciate without actually enjoying. I can see that the writing is accomplished. The descriptions are vivid, it’s atmospheric, the writing is lyrical and poetic and the story of a young man seeking vengeance for his cousin’s rape and murder touching and compelling. However, it simply wasn’t a book for me. Set in post-war Vietnam, with its lush landscape and remote villages, it was all a bit too lyrical for me and I couldn’t relate to the characters, not even ...more
