I never wanted to stop reading them. You may have heard this a lot (I definitely have as I am an identical twin) about twins being two halves of a whole. That you don't know where one ends and the other begins. I don't know where this story ends and where it begins. Where the thread of influence ends, if the tug on my line is going to reach some bottom of some well or go on falling forever and I'll wait to hear the telltale splash. I can't stop thinking about it and it feels like I am still reading it. I'm waiting to tell if it is a truth or if it is the lie. It is waiting to hear what you cannot live with as a truth. The lie is to yourself. The truth about what it means to be alone and if you can ever be another person. I love you. You don't love me. You love me. I don't love you. It's okay. We're going to kill everyone who stands in our way.

Lucas. Claus. Claus-Lucas. An anagram. The twins could be the kind of anagram like how evil can be live. Or vile. Mix a letter and presto it is the same? It is interesting to be an identical twin. It is the closest you can get to knowing how it feels to be another person. People you meet who will treat you one way because of how you look. The same upbringing and the same genetic one in a million lottery chances. How enough light could photo synthesis this shit to want to live. Nature and its backhanded complimentary nurture. Enough bad days. Starvation. Feeling enough that you're not alone when you look around the faceless. This other face you could see in the mirror. Or the little bit you have to go feels too far because you get to thinking it should be coming to you.

I don't know how to explain the feeling I had. It was a kind of faith that wasn't really faith, if that makes sense. Like being under water and trying to sing anyway and all of the words come at once and they mean so many different things. The words come out bubbles (by the time they float to the top they probably aren't bubbles anymore). More like a supplanted desire. All I ever want from a story is to be there and judge for myself from the community of expressions, movement, actions and words. Is there more behind it? Could it be anything more if only I could take it and run (away) with it? It means everything to me to have all the working parts to figure it out for myself with what mother nature (the, er, author) has given me. Agota Kristof is the answer to my prayers. Or was it just my dreams. (Please forgive my questioning mood. These books were fairy tale like to take me back to a childhood of the hows, whys and good and evil not sorted into their respective edges yet.)

Lucas and Claus present as one person. They live with their "witch" grandmother in a fairy horror of Nazi occupied Hungary. This might be bad of me (I haven't decided yet) that I was on their side in their exploits and experimentations. I was one of them. (What are we going to do, my twins? I'll hold my breath. That's character building.) Were they, really? Was it Lucas or was it Claus severed at the conjoined will? Did he lose his might. (The image of one twin heading off the frontier and the other going back to grandmother's house in communist Hungary haunts me. Please don't let it be true.) Was any of it love and when will the will return? If no one can know another person than this is the under the bridge version of that. The belly of that is the same. It has to be filled with the same guts. (Do I not bleeeeeeeed?) The lie or the truth did the mother leave them, was one a poet and the other less.

I feel like it could all be true and it's the anagram thing of switching out the letters. The whole needing anybody else. The distance (whole or otherwise). I feel like Agota Kristof showed me how that happens and what the other side of the distance feels like. I have only known my own. My letters. And I have no clue how to arrange those to communicate to anyone else why this book meant so much to me. So if you can believe me...

(I could talk about moments that haunted me. When Lucas listens to record with the little girl. He has forgotten how to live and now he's forgotten how to let go. The notebook written in for the other to finish.)

Parte prima: quello che pensi di capire di un libro non corrisponde quasi mai a quello che il libro vuole farti capire.

In short, it wasn't Agota Kristof's The Notebook, the Proof, and the Third Lie.

I answer that I try to write true stories but that at a given point the story becomes unbearable because of its very truth, and then I have to change it. I tell her that I try to tell my story but all of a sudden I can't -- I don't have the courage, it hurts too much. And so I embellish everything and describe things not as they happened but the way I wish they had happened.
She says, "Yes. There are lives sadder than the saddest of books."
I say, "Yes. No book, no matter how sad, can be as sad as a life."

Also a harrowing account of wartime Hungary and its almost-eternal aftermath, this single-volume trilogy is somehow both more scathingly real and far more ambiguous. Real in that Kristof gives every indication that this is an attempt to deal with her actual, lived experiences, and ambiguous in its often bizarre utilitarian morality and initial sense of sheer contextlessness.

All three parts are brilliant and resonate incredibly elegantly with eachother, but the first novel The Notebook is most focused, intense, and unique in its sense of austere perfect horror. The story is that of two hyper-rational precocious twins (joined into a single indistinguishable first person plural narrator) surviving and probing at their broken, compromised world in a murky wartime. So rational, these twins, that it's quickly certain that they're either complete sociopaths or perhaps the sanest conceivable residents of a universe completely fallen off its bearings. It's impossible to pull away from, a nightmare of depravity and deprivation rendered with a dispassionate objective precision that allows the unspeakable to be told, while somehow amplifying the dead-eyed horror of it all. And it's remarkably entertaining for all that, somehow. And desperately sad even through its frigid cold. As I said, I couldn't stop reading for anything. And this first part generated such momentum that it carried me through both subsequent books (which continuously expand upon and annihilate all that comes before and eachother) in two short days. (Unsurprising, then, that I first heard of this from someone who read it all in one day).

This is writing that takes every risk in order to fight its way off the page and burn brilliantly all around the reader, writing that cannot be escaped, writing that must be read. Urgent, scathing, deadly.

Bambini che sembrano essenzialmente macchine da guerra, addestrati da loro stessi a sopportare tutto ciò che è spiacevole e ad evitare ciò che invece può essere piacevole, per non turbare l'equilibrio della loro ricercata impassibilità al mondo; dalle loro esistenze è bandito il dolore così come l'amore, è bandito il concetto di male così come quello di bene. Dobbiamo sopportare morbosità, nefandezze, crudeltà, perpetrati come se nulla fosse, anche nei modi più inaspettati. Esiste solo ciò che deve essere fatto.
Dove sta il difficile? Nel fatto che quella descritta non è la morbosità, la nefandezza, la crudeltà della guerra, ma essenzialmente quella della vita. La guerra non fa che amplificare la tristezza e la negatività, che però non sono altro che parti della vita stessa.
Trilogia della città di K. è la narrazione dei meccanismi di difesa di due bambini dalle brutture del mondo e della loro esistenza, l'intero racconto è impregnato di un'atmosfera di anestesia emotiva, non desiderata ma intensamente ricercata perchè provare qualcosa di reale è troppo doloroso, distruttivo. Meglio essere morti (emotivamente) che deformi (e quindi sofferenti la propria condizione): questo viene ripetuto spesso.
E quindi si muore, ci si allena a non provare più emozioni, ci si spersonalizza, o ci si rifugia in un'altra vita che non è la propria, o nella pazzia. Basta difendersi da una realtà con cui ci si sente ogni giorno in una personalissima guerra.
La trama è complessa ma magistralmente costruita per entrare poco alla volta nella psicologia dei personaggi, iniziando dalla iniziale situazione fredda, metallica, scomoda, per poi avvicinarci alle persone, che si palesano solo dal secondo racconto, fino ad arrivare a vedere un po' più dentro di loro, e alle loro sofferenze così ben celate, che nonostante tutto possiamo fino alla fine solo intravedere.(less)

Scrivere una recensione su questo romanzo, o questa trilogia di romanzi, a seconda di come la si voglia intendere, non sarà facile: fosse solo per una scrittura minimale e una trama che pur ridotta all'osso si offre al lettore in un irruente metamorfismo che di volta in volta riscrive - letteralmente - la realtà.
Per fortuna, in mio soccorso giunge la Kristof stessa, con quel passo sopracitato che, buttato lì, a caso, non riesce tuttavia a sfuggire all'occhio attento e si rivela chiave crittografica di tutta l'opera. Lo stile della Kristof, che pure ricorda un certo gusto postcontemporaneo, soprattutto statunitense, sorprendentemente si presenta a sostegno di una storia ferocemente intima, psicologica, che continua, anche a livello stilistico, appunto, l'opera di inganno del lettore che accompagna tutta la lettura; quel che pare una storia di miseria e di guerra, di perdita e di dolore, è in realtà la storia di una solitudine che scardina la realtà, che trova nella funzione della scrittura il potere per eccellenza. L'abilità magistrale dell'autrice emerge nella precisa volontà di creare e suscitare sentimenti senza tuttavia nemmeno nominarli: e non si può che lodare chi, limitandosi alle cose, finisce col dare voce all'irrazionale, ai sentimenti umani. E' questo il potere più autentico della scrittura: una implacabile e infallibile trasfigurazione. E nel far ciò la Trilogia della città di K. ci regala la più magnifica santificazione della scrittura, la scrittura come il più nobile atto di finzione, di manipolazione della realtà.
Così, di volta in volta, la realtà muta sotto i colpi della penna: ora è la storia di un'infanzia mutilata che inventa un mondo pur di sottrarsi a un altro, ora è la storia di una solitudine che vuole urlare se stessa a qualcun altro; ora è la storia del più grande capolavoro taciuto e sconosciuto, o la storia di una guerra che cancella per sempre la realtà così come conosciuta; è, soprattutto, la storia di una fuga, di un'attesa, della necessità di un ritorno. Ero sicura che avrei letto un bellissimo romanzo (e dio solo sa quanto ne avrei bisogno in questo momento). Ne ero sicura perchè ho letto recensioni entusiastiche al riguardo, su aNobii ed altrove, e pensavo di "giocare sul sicuro".

Lo stile elementare, inizialmente, apparenta questo romanzo alle favolette che si raccontano ai bambini perché non facciano i capricci a tavola e considerino quanto affamati e sfortunati siano i loro coetanei che abitano in paesi di guerra – seguendo questo ragionamento, la madre che le racconta non dovrebbe azzardarsi a comprare neanche un paio di scarpe, visto che nei paesi del terzo mondo le donne non hanno di che vestirsi, ma questa è un’altra storia.
E forse di una favoletta si tratta, posto...more Lo stile elementare, inizialmente, apparenta questo romanzo alle favolette che si raccontano ai bambini perché non facciano i capricci a tavola e considerino quanto affamati e sfortunati siano i loro coetanei che abitano in paesi di guerra – seguendo questo ragionamento, la madre che le racconta non dovrebbe azzardarsi a comprare neanche un paio di scarpe, visto che nei paesi del terzo mondo le donne non hanno di che vestirsi, ma questa è un’altra storia.
E forse di una favoletta si tratta, posto che accadono vicende forse non magiche, ma sicuramente fuori dall’ordinario: ne Il grande quaderno, infatti, due gemellini vengono condotti dalla madre a casa della Vecchia Strega –la crudele nonna materna-, per allontanarli dalla Grande Città su cui incombe la seconda guerra mondiale. La Strega li nutre –ben poco, in verità-, e dà loro un tetto sopra la testa, ma li batte, li umilia, li sfrutta, e cerca di soffocare la loro straordinaria intelligenza che va oltre il comprensibile. Totalmente intercambiabili, privi di una personalità indipendente da quella dell’altro, i gemelli coltivano abitudini inquietanti per la loro età e la loro condizione, come esercizi di resistenza al dolore o di crudeltà, e continuano a studiare di nascosto. Crescono laconici, indifferenti, capaci di uccidere con una purezza e una semplicità disarmanti, così come di assistere impassibili all’esplosione della Madre. Piegano l’ambiente in cui vivono per ricavarne le migliori condizioni di vita possibili, sfruttano le persone con cui interagiscono: la Strega, l’Attendente, l’Ufficiale, la Fantesca, il Curato, Labbro Leporino e la Vicina, tutti senza nome e senza volto, esseri di carne e di vizi, maliziosi o ingenui, ricchi di bontà o di cattiveria, e anche loro intercambiabili tra di loro nell’esercizio di dissolutezze o atti di dolcezza.
La parte della trilogia che ho preferito, senza dubbio. Ma questa è solo una favola, anche se crudele, no?
Già ne La prova i personaggi si concretizzano, assumono nomi e identità: la prosa si fa meno incisiva e più descrittiva, i periodi si allungano. Claus e Lucas, questi i nomi dei due bambini, ormai quindicenni, si dividono. Ma ci saranno sul serio due bambini? La Madre e il Padre hanno davvero fatto la fine descritta dai quaderni? Chi erano, in realtà, tutti i personaggi allegorici incontrati dai gemellini durante la loro infanzia e da Lucas durante la sua adolescenza e maturità? La terza menzogna stravolge ogni aspettativa. Perché niente è mai come sembra, e quando tutto è contraddittorio, tutto potrebbe essere falso. E la vita, d’altronde, è spesso più intricata di un romanzo.

Tagliente e agghiacciante, la Trilogia della città di K. offre uno spaccato dell’Ungheria della seconda guerra mondiale, a metà tra favola e romanzo. Una storia tutta da scoprire, a volte vicina come stile e temi a Cormac McCarthy, sia pure con ambientazione europea. Doloroso da leggere, velenoso, ma sicuramente formativo.

This one contains one short novel that should be by all means be a "new classic" of our times - ok the late 1980's when it was first published. This is The Notebook which is just awesome, mind blowing and something utterly original - very dark, graphic and explicit so not for everyone but awesome nonetheless

Как написана книга: "Чтобы решить «Хорошо» или «Плохо», у нас есть очень простое правило: сочинение должно быть правдой. Мы должны описывать то, что есть, то, что видим, слышим, делаем. Например, запрещается писать: «Бабушка похожа на ведьму»; но можно писать: «Люди называют Бабушку Ведьмой». Запрещается писать: «Маленький Город красив» потому что Маленький Город может быть красивым для нас и некрасивым для кого-нибудь другого. Также, если мы пишем: «Денщик добрый», то это неправда, потому что денщик может совершить злые поступки, о которых мы не знаем. Поэтому мы напишем просто: «Денщик дает нам одеяла»."

С первых строк стиль написания навязывает читателю без оценочное восприятие содержимого. Герои(дети) убивают и шантажируют, жалеют и помогают, показывают жестокость, никак не относятся к смерти мамы с ребёнком, убивают отца - всё это читаешь с позиции "как есть"- нет чувств! Это приводит к ловушке - читатель верит в этот складный,без эмоциональный диалог близнецов с окружающим миром, диалог которого не существует - вымысел одного из близнецов.
Стиль изложения отлично накладывается трафаретом на твой способ мышления.(less)

Che tristezza. La prima metà è scivolata via molto velocemente, la seconda l'ho dovuta leggere con più calma. I managed to blow through all 460 or so pages of this book within 24 hours, but instead of feeling concerned I wasn't reading close enough, I really feel much more enraptured with the narrative that's here, and closer to how the three books interact than I would be otherwise.

Icy. I can't find a better adjective to describe The Notebook, the first part of this trilogy.
There are no feelings. There are merely words. Everything is objective. Even blood looks like black ink on a white paper. Death is just an analytic phenomenon.

And then the second and the third part of the trilogy are a complicated mechanism in which what you read is not what you get and while you get it, it gets you.

Lo stile elementare, inizialmente, apparenta questo romanzo alle favolette che si raccontano ai bambini perché non facciano i capricci a tavola e considerino quanto affamati e sfortunati siano i loro coetanei che abitano in paesi di guerra – seguendo questo ragionamento, la madre che le racconta non dovrebbe azzardarsi a comprare neanche un paio di scarpe, visto che nei paesi del terzo mondo le donne non hanno di che vestirsi, ma questa è un’altra storia.

A volte è mortale, è vero, in tempi di guerra lo è spesso, qui in questo libro lo è sempre; tanto da far rabbia. Quella rabbia salata che scende giù dagli occhi. E tu, lettore imbattutoti in tutto questo, sei costretto a piangere nel ritmo lento delle tristi emozioni. Declinate una per una, pagina dopo pagina. Sempre pronti ad affrontare le prove che la vita ha messo loro d’avanti, e addirittura così arditi da autoinfliggersene di nuove per trovarsi pronti un giorno qualora se ne presentasse la sfida. Così li vedi picchiarsi tra di loro, come esercizio di irrobustimento del corpo. Oppure li vedi sdraiati a terra, uno accanto all’altro indifferenti a tutto, muti, per un giorno intero. Potrebbe già essere questa una storia singolare, eppure è qualcosa di molto più, perché vissuta in uno sfondo di guerra e miseria. Dove quello che ti immagini assieme al rosso dolore è un grigio cupo, del cielo, della terra, e dei corpi sporchi. Gente invalida errante, bambini abbandonati, donne esasperate e violentate dai soldati, dalla vita. Gente privata di uomini sani, perfetti per impugnare un’arma, perfetti per morire oltre la frontiera, solcata da mine esplose. In questa moltitudine di storie e di separazioni, o provvedi a te stesso o lentamente muori.

Io fortunatamente vivo, e tutto sommato vivo bene. Non sono ancora in guerra, non sono neanche misero, ed ho avuto la possibilità di leggere, senza essermelo guadagnato. Sono nato così, possedendo il diritto alla lettura, assieme a tutti gli altri diritti. Ho potuto leggere questo libro centellinandolo, perché di tempo ne avevo per assaporarne la sua bellezza. Perché di tempo ne avevo per sorridere o piangere, per stupirmi o pormi innumerevoli domande. Certo, potevo anche leggerlo in uno o due giorni, il libro lo permetteva. Quel linguaggio diretto, secco, perforante, si faceva leggere velocemente. Ma che senso ha leggere un libro di questi con frenesia? Avendone la possibilità, come davanti ad una zuppa di legumi, l’ho gustato di cucchiaio in cucchiaio.

Io tutto questo, loro tutto il resto. Lucas, Claus e tutti gli altri.

"Questo libro è disgustoso", è quello che ho pensato all'inizio, leggendo il primo libro. Mi ha fatto stare così male, mi ha rivoltato così tanto lo stomaco che avrei voluto smetterlo e non pensarci più. Sono andata avanti per due motivi: uno è che me l'ha regalato il mio più caro amico, il secondo, molto più banale, è che ero in treno e praticamente avevo solo quello da leggere.

I read these three in the original French. Kristof's prose is very simple and easy to read for someone whose native language is not French. The simplicity of her writing, however, does not detract from the novels. Me acerqué con cierto hastío a lo que parecía otra historia de guerra más, pero desde el principio las sensaciones fueron grandes. El primero de la trilogía, "El gran cuaderno", es quizá el más redondo y sorprende por la forma de narrar cosas tremendas con la mayor impasibilidad, mediante frases cortas que te golpean. I just finished The Notebook and I don't think I have ever read a more disturbing story.

Identical twins are brought by their mother to live with their grandmother while war rages in their country. It's unclear if this is set in the past or the future and it's not really relevant as it's supposed to create a sense of timelessness.

The depraved actions of the twins and the people around them are horrifying, though I understand that they are symbolic of what happens in war. I think reading this boo...more

Claus and Lucas are the twin protagonists of the novel. Due to the current war is brewing in the nation his mother let them living with them grandmother. There children are taught in developing all kinds of resistors: to the ugly words, to despicable acts, to the hunger and pains; the harshness of life. Partiamo dalla parte che mi è piaciuta meno: l'ultima. Anche io, come gli abitanti della città, mi sono subito affezionata ai gemelli, per cui è stato brutto vederli appassire e morire così.
Ho affrontato questo libro con un certo distacco, non pensavo potesse catturare la mia attenzione. Invece mi sono trovata ad averlo finito in 3 giorni di lettura. Lo stile è scorrevole, si passa di pagina in pagina senza accorgersene. Il tono è triste ma determinato, cinico.

E' vero che questo libro parla di guerra. E' vero che parla della miseria che ne deriva: miseria economica,morale,fisica,psicologica e sentimentale.
