I really enjoyed three things about this book.

First, the author found an elegant solution to the inevitable Heart of Darkness comparisons by having the main characters joke about Kurtz in the beginning of the narrative. It's as if Schell is saying "Yes, I know you think this is a Conrad rip-off, because it's about white people going into the central African jungle. But there's more going on here, so let's move along, shall we?"

Shelves: fiction
Fast-paced and intriguing novel about two Americans living in Africa after the Peace Corps. Their experiences and viewpoints diverge in a surprising manner. The chapters shift between the voices of the Americans as well as some of the African characters, which makes for interesting reading.
