This continues to be my favorite series for so many reasons. I love this serial format. It's like reading Matthew Reilly except you wait a month between chapters. A resolution, some story building, then a cliffhanger, repeat. And it works, so well. You don't imagine you would find nuances of dialog and character building and motivation in a story of this size. This isn't your typical Present Maiden, introduce Dragon, Slay, Wed, kind of tale. There are layers here. It just keeps building and ...more

As with the previous novellas in this series, Heir Expectant was well written and very fast paced but I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed. The Scion's throne-grab was so easy in the end. I know that he had a lot of supporters but to take a City so quickly and easily just seemed a little anti-climatic. It also irked me a little that we never find out the truth of his claims. His belief that Lillian killed his mother has been exposited since the Scion of the Woods but we never discover ...more
