Gejolak di dalam perusahaan pun semakin kompleks dengan meledaknya pabrik di Chili, laporan mengenai salah obat yang menimpa ratusan pengguna produk Roffe and Sons, serta ilmuwan periset ulung yang tewas dibunuh.
Semua permasalahan berkelit-kelindan dan bersimpul pada keselamatan Elizabeth sendiri. Demi menyelamatkan perusahaan, dia menempuh caranya sendiri: menikahi Rhys Williams, tangan kanan ayahnya.
Kehadiran detektif Max Hornung cukup berandil mengurai satu per satu benang kusut yang melilit Roffe and Sons.

Kekuasaan, percintaan, skandal, konspirasi, dan pembunuhan adalah tema khas Sidney Sheldon. Sewaktu SMA, saya pernah membaca salah satu novelnya (lupa judulnya apa). Akan tetapi, saya masih ingat bahwa cerita yang diangkat Sheldon tak jauh-jauh dari yang saya sebutkan di atas.
Membaca novel setebal 552 halaman ini membuat saya harus membuka, menutup, dan membuka kembali puluhan kali untuk melanjutkan napas pembacaan saya. Berat? Lumayan. Apalagi saya adalah tipe pembaca lambat.
Namun, saya bertekad untuk menyelesaikannya. Dan, energi yang saya keluarkan pun, rupanya impas dengan kenikmatan akhir yang saya dapatkan. Rasanya seperti menonton film beraroma thriller. Saya bernapas lega.
Harus saya akui bahwa Sheldon adalah pencerita ulung. Tokoh-tokohnya hidup. Aksi-aksi mereka detil. Perpindahan plot tidak membuatnya tergelincir. Sangat filmis.
Salut juga untuk penerjemahannya yang cantik. Sehingga saya paham apa itu ‘film-cekikan’.

I like action novels. In this novel, Sydney Sheldon seemed to take more than 3/4 of the book just to set up all the characters. Then, all of a sudden one detective happens to make all the right assumptions, and solves the case. It seemed as though the author got tired of the story and just wanted to hurry up and finish the book; only,I think his readers are more eager then he, to have the book end. I had to force myself to pick up the book to continue reading it. It wasn't horribly boring, ...more

The book centers around a pharmaceutical company and the family squabble over control of it after the president dies mysteriously.

The book should be mostly about Elizabeth Roffe, heir to the Roffe and Sons empire, the man who wants to marry her and the person who wants to kill her. i like the story. about Elizabeth a girl who raised in rich family but didnt get love from her family. and there is Rhys, underling of her father, who she secretly in love for years. and she ask rhys to marry her for the company, while in truth that's because she loves him and want to have him.

So, so good. It's a one day read, if you want to spend around 5 hours reading. ;] I did. I loved it. I didn't want to put it down. EVER. :] It was really had to figure out who did it. You literally don't know for sure until the very end. Every single person has a motive. I'm so glad Mother recommended it!

i love this book. i think i read it thrice. i love rhys williams a lot. why the hell not?? an example of a man from rags to riches, beautiful and amazing and the old sam roffe..his story is great! the novel is fast-paced and you cannot simply put it down. it is invigoratingly propulsive.

I'm not much a fan of Sidney Sheldon but the previous books of his that I've read I had given 5 stars. This one didn't just give such throat constricting suspense or mind boggling twists. Or maybe it wasn't that thrilling because I already took a peek first at the last few chapters.

Written in 1977 or so, this book is still relevant today - will probably be relevant 20, 50 and 100 years from now. Wealthy family, corruption, fetishes - what's not to love?
