This volume is bizarrely even more tragic than the previous two, if alone because of the fracturing personality of Gen's mother and the terrible tribulations borne by them when trying to find temporary shelter and food. There is hope though, with the return of the rest of their family and the stories of others who struggle with accepting life after the bomb.

Similar to volume 2, this is an important book to have read, but that's not the same as it being a good book. (I read volumes 2 & 3 back-to-back, so much of my thoughts on volume 2 apply to volume 3, as well.)
