Long ago Beaver did not look like he does now. Yes, he had two very large front teeth, but his tail was not wide and flat. It was thick with silky fur. Vain Beaver is inordinately proud of his glorious tail. When he's not bragging about his tail, Beaver spends his time grooming it, while the other woodland creatures go about their business of finding food and shelter for ...more

A calm and sensitive folk tale that manages to impart a fine lesson without beating you over the head.
Illustrations are beautiful and worthy of long gazes.

This is a great Ojibwe story of why beaver's tail is flat and has no fur. It also gives lessons about boasting and building community.

I am on a quest to find a wonderful picture book that I can use in my classroom to discuss humility. This was recommended to me. It is a great story with lovely illustrations. At the beginning, beaver alienates all his friends with his incessant bragging about his big, furry, lovely tail. One day, while chewing on the trunk of a tree, he stops to run in circles and chase his beautiful tail. He is so focused on admiring his tail, he doesn't realize the tree is cracking. It falls, landing on his ...more

My son and I both loved this re-telling of the Native American legend about how the beaver got its unusual tail. The story provides an accurate view of the forest habitat, and the moral lesson unfolds in a subtle and natural way, not at all "preachy." The Legend of the Beaver's Tail is a fantastic read aloud, with wonderful illustrations, excellent pacing, and a pleasant rhythm to the text. The information on the back pages adds a rich layer of facts about beavers and their habitat, along with ...more

I've always loved origin tales, and this one from the Ojibwa Native American tribe contains good life lessons. Beaver is proud of his lush tail and brags about it at every chance he gets. His attitude results in his friends avoiding him, but when an accident causes him to lose the furry pelt and end up with a very flat tail, his time spent alone while his friends are gone reminds him of the value of friendship. No one wants to be around someone who brags all the time. The illustrations ...more

Beaver's loves his beautiful fluffy tail. Wait. what? Read to see how Beaver got his current flat tail and why the Beaver is a Keystone Species. Great illustrations and information at the end of the book.

Although not written by a Native American, this is promoted "as told by" and pays tribute to the Ojibwe people and legends.

Up close illustrations are mostly realistic, this fish jumping, the logs/sticks piled on the dam, the chewed tree trunk.
