'Lodgers' is a hilarious, unsentimental report from the front lines of the Balkan wars of the 1990s. All of the folly and the horror of that time are revealed in the sarcastic report of the novel's teenage would-be authoress.

During the mid to late 1990s teenage diaries of the siege of Sarajevo in 1992 & 1993 were a minor publishing industry in themselves. Velickovic's slightly cynical, often extremely sarcastic, usually naive-in-a-good-way narrator, Maja, struggles with the problem of whether she is writing a novel in diary form or a diary in novel form. I'm not sure what a teenage Muslim would sound like if she was narrating a siege – but Maja is plausible: she casts a vaguely cynical and thoroughly ironic eye ...more
I'm not sure if it was me, or the translation, or the book itself, but I never really settled into Lodgers. Set in besieged Sarajevo during the 1990s war, it's narrated by the teenage Maja who records life with her family and neighbours as they try to survive the conflict. As their family home has been destroyed, they are currently living in the National Museum, of which her father is the Director. I wanted to like the novel, but much of the humour either doesn't translate (there are a number of ...more

For the novel's conception and originality, I give it 5 stars. While I took issue with the narrative voice (the main character is a static observer, while the depth of thought presented by the author clearly shows the reader she has potential to do more than merely serve as a camera lens through which we can see her family, namely her brother and her father), and I found several observations about war to be more heavy handed than they could have been (removed from the scene/action instead of org ...more

I love Velickovic style to describe the Bosnian society and the war by using naive characters. While they do barely understand what is happening, the reader can feel Bosnia coming out of the pages. Velickovic's novels do make me feel nostalgic.
Lodgers narrates the siege of Sarajevo by describing its people routine but also by making clear how corrupted and polarized the society was. Even if sometimes Maja seemed too naive and quite unnatural, I apreciated the authors sense of humor.
