I won this book on a Goodreads Giveaway.

I was not too enthralled with this book, but to be fair, it may be more about the reader in this case then the actual book.

The book is a historical fiction book that follows the travels of Joe Oscar, a young man that the reader finds on a herd, driving cattle through Indian territory, across rivers, until they reach Dodge City. Along the way, Joe and the other cattlemen hunt for food, fight the elements, and risk their lives in order to bring in the herd.

I won this book on Goodreads.
It was a fascinating story of the history of the west in 1876 and some of the men who rode through it. It was told in first person so it was very personal. There was some killing, lots of hunting and interactions with Indians. There were some scalawags, poker playing and some very memorable historical characters you will recognize. Excellent historical fiction. It narrates at the speed things actually happen, neither too slow as to be dull nor so fast as to be frantic.
