S.A. Hunter
This is a slim book published 33 years ago. I'm a fan of Tanith Lee and have read many of her books. Shon the Taken is not one of her best books, but it was still enjoyable. The story centers on the title character Shon who lives in a simple village full of many superstitions. Fantasy, mild horror,

I was dubious at the start, young boys, rites of manhood in hunting, but kept going and Shon's adventures are quite fantastic. The suspense and mysteries build up and keep one turning the pages.

Not sure of children's classification, I would say PG or over 10; 13 even? Yet less than wicked wolf gobbling up grandma etc.
