If your only knowledge of this story is through film (either animated or live-action) you must . . .MUST . . . run out and read the actual, original text. Seuss's work is so visual and his playful, inventive language is so captivating that filmmakers (even when Seuss is directly involved as in the Boris Karloff-Voiced Grinch) can't help but pad his work with long passages devoted to interesting drawings of wackily-named who-toys.

Every year since I can remember I've watched the cartoon movie special on TV around Christmas, I didn't particularly enjoy the real one, along with Frosty, Rudolph and Olive, but there isn't really difference in either the book or movie, besides the obvious, moving images and sketched drawings. I learned to read at who knows what age, around 4 I believe, but never thought about reading the book. Finally in kindergarten we studied Dr. Suess, and I finally remembered, "D'oh! There's a book!&q...more

This book is great. Seeing this on display at a bookstore got me curious because a lot of kids where gathered all around it and that I never bothered to watch the movie ever...
The first thing that got me was the rhyming, which is probably the most notable trademark of Dr. Suess. The illustrations are fun to look at and the story just makes me smile and laugh most of the way through the end! One hell of a Christmas story!

Years ago, when my nephew was still small, my parents and I spent Christmas with my brother's mother- and father-in-law up in north Texas. Because Christmas doesn't count without the Grinch, I brought my tape along. But then I got worried that they might not have a VCR, so I brought the book, too. Over the course of the next 3 days, I must have read that book aloud some 50 or 60 times at my nephew's request. He sat enthralled every single time. It's not as fun to read aloud as Fox in Socks,...more

This is my favorite Seuss book, the power of which only really struck me when I first shared it with my little brother, Fin. More than most of his works, this one has an interesting plot in addition to the typically wonderful drawings and wierd text. Thanks to the uniquely bizarre style of the author the moral of the tale is not cloying.
Year later, in 1966, in one of his last works, Boris Karloff did the story for an animated television special. Again, I saw and appreciated it with my bro...more

This is indeed one of my favorite Seuss books and Christmas stories. My children makes fun of me because when the cartoon version comes on tv I can recite it word for word. Of course, the book works the same way for me. The Grinch is just so grumpy, and who wouldn't feel sorry for Max.
I love the almost too goody-goody Whos, but especially Cindy Lou Who. For me Jim Carey almost ruined this story for me, I have just learned not to watch that particular version of the story. This is a gr...more

As I've mentioned before, my mom didn't approve of Dr. Seuss, so I didn't read this book until I was grown. But my sister and I would try to watch the animated special every year on television, which meant I knew the story long before I read the book.
I think it's cool that the term "Grinch" for someone who's not into the beloved Christian/Consumer holiday is a generally recognized term in the US (or at least the parts of the US that I've been in).

The best Seuss ever! Sometimes, when I'm enduring the noise of my nieces and nephews at Christmas, I can really relate to the Grinch.
...All the Who girls and boys
Would wake up bright and early. They'd rush for their toys!
And then! Oh, the noise! Oh, the noise! Noise! Noise! Noise!
That's one thing he hated! The NOISE! NOISE! NOISE! NOISE!
But then I see how cute they are, and my heart goes back to normal size, and I love Christmas again.

Whenever someone asks me if I celebrate Christmas and I'm about to be catty and say that I don't because I'm not a Christian, I wish an alert would sound in my ear and warn me not to be like Grinch. "Don't steal Christmas, Yulia. Don't do it!"

man. i read this every christmas - i got it for the little boy i babysit as a present this year, so i would have another excuse to read it.
my sister got me the movie one year, and it remains one of the best christmas presents ever. i mean, the books is amazing, but boris' voice reading is classic, as is the song, "you're a mean one, mr. grinch".
dr. seuss was a literary genius, and this remains of my favorite things ever.

This book is like the best christmas tale ever. How the Grinch stole Christmas! is about a Grinch who doesn't like christmas and wants to ruin it for everybody in whoville by stealing there presents, christmas trees and even their food. He stole everything they had. But eventually the Grinch came around and gave everybody their things back and had a happy whoville christmas.

Too bad Dr. Seuss is dead- nobody can sue him for using the word 'christmas' on the cover. Just kidding. I am, however, surprised nobody has raised up a stink about that. Anyway, this book is good for the Scrooges of the world who plain out don't appreciate Christmas. This should remind them of what it's all about. Take that, Scrooge!

This is still one of my favorite Christmas stories. Simply but brilliantly written and wonderfully illustrated. I also loved the movie (the original cartoon version, with Boris Karloff as the Grinch), and the musical score. Everyone should read this book once a year, especially all of us old grinches.

I get grinchy at christmas thinking me and everyone else are to caught up in the temporal things, but the truth is if it all was taken away we'd still be singing Hallelujah's to our Savior & King. So I'll just be gratefull for the temporal things while I have them and continue singing.

Theodore Giesel aka Dr. Seuss has a way with words that will captivate any child. How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a classic. The 1966 animated television special with the voice of the thrillingly scary Boris Karloff as narrator has become a timeless classic in itself.

Like the movie, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the book is one of my favorites. It is a classic, and I would tell anyone to read the book and the to watch the movie, whether it is the old version or the newest one, either way the book and the movie are great!

I love this book. It is a staple reread (several times) every Christmas. However, I don't think I read it as a kid. By the time I read it in maybe college, I knew almost all of the words already from seeing the cartoon a couple times every Christmas.

I don’t have a better memory than my mother reading this to me every Christmas saying in her little mom voice… “but he hadn’t stopped Christmas from coming it came! Somehow or another it came just the same”. This is what Christmas is all about!

This is one that I looked forward to seeing on TV every year, as a child. We own the video, and I still enjoy watching it as an adult. This is one where I probably enjoy watching it as least as much as reading it, although we do also own the book.

I don't care how old or young you are. The holiday season just will not be complete without reading & watching How the grinch stole Christmas. Every year I read it or view it, its like the first time. Everyone should own a copy.
