I am really starting to like the YA books that are being told from the guys point of view. Becoming Chloe was an impulse pickup from the library based solely on the cover ( I know I shouldn't do that), but I am so glad that I grabbed it. We meet Jordan "Jordy" at the beginning while he is listening to someone having sex; he soon realizes that it really isn't consensual and that there is a rape keeping him awake.

Catherine Ryan Hyde is best known for her big hit as a book and a film, "Pay It Forward."
"Becoming Chloe" also focuses on making the world a better place. In this book, seeing that there is beauty in the world is a matter of life and death.
Jordan, homeless, takes a chance and yells for help when a girl is being raped. The girl, Wanda Johnston, has lived a life in which rape is the least of her problems, so she says. She has no knowledge of a loving fa More...

17 year old Jordy, who was abused by his parents because he's gay, left his home in Conneticut to start over in New York City where he's currently living in an abandoned cellar. His third night living in this cellar, he witnesses a girl being raped and stops it by scaring the rapists off. The girl slips into the cellar and Jordy finds out her name is Chloe and she has been living in that cellar as well. Jordy becomes the unspoken gaurdian of this 19 year old girl, who is so naive and starngely i

This is not what I usually read but I thought I'd try something new and different and I'm glad I did.
This book made a whole lot of difference to me. It's one of those books that make you see the world differently like you've never seen it before. Even if slightly. There are so many beautiful things in our world, not just from the exterior but from the interior that we take for granted or not really 'look' at them carefully.

A very sensitive, poignant read....it was a great break from senseless YA romances with a girl who love TWO guys:-P
It's a story about a guy called Jordan who has left home and is living on the streets. He doesn't have a care in life until one day he rescues a girl from being harrassed. The girl, Wanda who doesn't like her name and on Jordy's suggestion changes it to Chloe, seems very innocent, she doesn't know what's happening to her and yet sometimes she surprises Jordy with displays of e More...

Jordan, a homeless teenager who makes cash through gay prostitution, breaks up a horrible gang rape in the alley beside the cellar he’s staying in. When he goes out to comfort the girl, he finds her nonchalant and shrugging. She, Chloe, doesn’t seem to realize that rape is wrong, saying that this happens all the time. Her words are very childlike, and she doesn’t seem to understand much of the world around her.

I thought this book was very interesting. I had never read anything like it. I think the fact that Jordy is so kind and giving and would do anything for Chloe when he doesn't even know her is beautiful. Jordy and Chloe become like siblings. They are both homeless and travel from place to place getting all of the help they can. Surprisingly, a ton of people help them. They begin to have a type of routine that they follow, and Chloe becomes better each day. Jordy wants to prove to Chloe that there

Here is a wonderful story about a really awkward subject matter, a lost and lonely rape victim, befriended by a confused gay boy in a slum in Manhattan, and how they endeavour to discover and reinvent themselves on a cross-country odyssey conducted on the very barest shoestring. You will pull for them every inch of the way.
I confess I have a fondess for novels about self-reinvention, such as 'Gatsby' and my own 'Deirdre' (for which this book was bought as research/inspiration) and 'Ch More...

This book was beautiful. The idea is that these two homeless kids who've been beat up by life (literally) get together and end up going on a road trip to try to decide if there is enough beauty in life to want to keep living. I was impressed by the author's portrayal of the beauty of nature, the kindness of strangers, and also the carelessness of people and the deliberate cruelty of people to one another: she puts them all in, and doesn't try to make it all good or all bad. I loved the character

Becoming Chloe is a really moving book. Since it's told from the point of view of Jordan, a young adult who finds a strange girl named Chloe, you never really know what Chloe's full story is. The mystery of it is interesting. Chloe seems very innocent, even though she's been through a lo. She also seems sad and wistful. Later on in the book, you find out about Chloe's depression. She's convinced that the world is an ugly place, so Jordan takes her across the country to beautiful places to show

well it keep me intrusted for the first part of it, because what all was happening..Jordy selling himself and the whole jacket or deal but once the were on the road trip it got boring! i wish it told more in depth about both of their pasts. i know it kinda tells some what of what happens with Jordy and his father but not much.
but like i said at the beginning of the novel i didn't want to put it down but towards the end it lost my intrust. i get the whole beauty thing and him wanting to h More...

Becoming Chloe is about two teenager’s journey around the world to see if the world is a beautiful place or not. As it turned out, it’s both beautiful and sucky.
For the first half of the book, few things were vague to me: it had no expressive interaction between characters. The writing was raw and dry, it hold the main characters from playing their part properly. However, as the story progressed, Chloe and Jordan started to interact, the whole thing made sense and it was OK … only f More...

17- year-old Jordan "Jordy" is homeless after coming out to his homophobic parents. His life changes one night when he saves a girl from being raped. Her name is Chloe, and she is extremely childlike, although she has seen horrible things growing up. She is also strangely determined and strong willed, and Jordy witnesses this firsthand when he becomes sick and Chloe sits outside the hospital for hours to get him medicine. Events change for them, and result in the two of them taking a r

Everyone must have a purpose to live.... Chloe was Jordy's purpose. And the book was in search of a purpose for Chloe to live, through travel and adventures that would open her eyes to the world's beauty. Simultaneously Jordy's eyes were opened even though he thought they were all ready open. Perhaps he was not really seeing the world but for the first time.

This novel opens to Jordan (first-person narrative) listening to the sounds of sex in the alley outside where he's sleeping. At first annoyed, he realizes that the woman is being raped and scares the guys off. This book taught me how to see the beauty in even the most smallest of things and it just captured me from the start.
Chloe made me smile. He attitude towards life was so simple but held so much insight. Even though the book wasn't told from her point of view I still connected with her.
Jordy was so caring and loving towards Chloe even though she was a total stranger. I think he was just one example of how kind people can be.

This is not my usual type of book at all but I am so glad I took a chance on it. The strength demonstrated in this book is inspiring, as well is the loyolty. Jordan takes Chloe under his wing and once he sees a slip of Chloe underneath her childlike defense, he never once considers abandoning her. Its as if they adopt each other. They go across country to look at all the beautiful things the world has to offer, the beautiful things not many people appreciate anymore. This could be one of those b

Edit: Changing the shelves -- Chloe isn't a manic pixie. She's just childish.
Edit Edit: I wrote a really fangirlish review and saved it on my comp. I'll post it although keep in mind I wrote it after finishing the book and it will be very, very fangirlish. And since I read this book like a year ago I am also very naive and childish in it. Please no comments on some of the stuff I will say, such as my bashing of N&E's No Kiss List. I decided to post the review uncensored -- a glimpse More...

This is a good book, one I would re-read. It has a good story line. I admire the strength in Jordy's personality as he and Chloe overcome many obstacles including some of Chloe's inner conflict. The book starts off slow but as Jordy realizes what he and Chloe have to do the book gets really interesting.
The conclusion that they both come to at the end is one that every individual can either agree or disagree to as Jordy and Chloe have a slightly different point of view at the end of this b More...

17-year-old Jordy--a runaway after coming out to his homophobic parents--didn't know it was going to change his life when he saves a beautiful blond girl from rape. Suddenly he's stuck taking care of Chloe--which is not her real name but is preferred over her real one--who is strangely childlike although incredibly smart and determined at times. Jordy's got problems of his own, too, but he can't help feeling that he must protect Chloe, that something terrible has happened to her and that she is

Becoming Chloe is one of those books that gives you hope in the world we live in, that even if it fells like the world is crashing down around us sometimes and we're nothing short of loosing it all, there is still beauty in it. Beauty that is endless. Beauty that gives you hope no matter what the situation.
From the first page, the reader is thrown into the world of Jordy, a boy who's just about lost it all. He's homeless and has no money to speak, as well as a big cut in his head th More...

The opening scene is enough to turn anyone away since Jordy happens upon Chloe being raped in an alley. And so their friendship begins since Jordy has run away from his anti-gay wealthy parents while Chloe is placidly floating along in her simplemindedness. So, Jordy takes it upon himself to show Chloe the beauty in the world to try to rescue her.
She says, "Even if this was the only thing I ever did in my whole life, it would be worth having a life just to do this.

This is about two kids who begin to learn how to help themselves. It is fraught with danger and risk and still embraces the idea that life may be beautiful, if you know how to look. In my opinion, the most difficult thing to write is pleasure and beauty. I will return to this book again and again to examine how this author pulled it off.

I ordered Becoming Chloe last year at the Random Buzzer store with my buzz bucks and so glad I did. This was a really great book.
Jordy has been on his own in NYC for a while. Then he meet a girl 'Chloe' whom now he feels responsible for. She is an unusual girl who has seen things people do not normally see. Their bond grows so much after the adventure that they have been through. They are both just trying to move on from the life they left and be on their own.

Another book for a mature teen. A gay teenage boy and a fragile teenage girl meet while living on the streets of New York City and eventually decide to take a road trip across America to discover whether or not the world is a beautiful place. Was paced well. I enjoyed reading it.

I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't a book i normally read, but i did enjoy it anyway. I liked that it wasn't just a noramlly book about two straight people, that it included some one who was gay and someone who was fostered and a little bit different.

A powerful novel that shows the beauty and ugliness of the world through the eyes of two teenagers on a road trip to find beauty. Starts out dark and gritty, but soon becomes hopeful and bright without completely losing its edge. Touching and funny.

The character Chole, seemed liked a deeply unhappy person who just needs someone to look out for her, a protector, because she's already been hurt too many times. An interesting read to say the least.
