this book is riveting, original and a quintessential read for any Singaporean interested in getting an authentic look at pre-1945 Singapore through the eyes of a great local pioneer. I had read Mr Maurice Baker's second book, Accidental Diplomat, and am delighted to note how this book, together with the first that recounts Singapore's founding years, builds a beautiful collective local historical narrative.
