I had very mixed feelings about this story. There were things that I liked about it, but there were other things that really frustrated me and came perilously close to giving it wall-banger status, something that is highly unusual for me. It was a primarily character-driven story with nearly all the conflict being of an internal nature. I found the plot to be interesting but very predictable. It was a primarily character-driven story with nearly all the conflict being of an internal nature. I found the plot to be interesting but very predictable. While there were some emotional romantic moments, they were just too few and inconsistent. The love scenes were very hot and steamy, but just lacked a certain emotional depth. I think this was partly due to the back-and-forth, will-they-or-won't-they nature of the story which became rather tiresome.

I liked Edward and Florence, but didn't really feel that their characterizations were consistent and sometimes they just weren't relatable to me. Florence was a sweet simple vicar's daughter who was extremely naive particularly when it came to things of a sexual nature, but yet was very willing and even eager to participate in sexual intimacies that were out of the ordinary. She almost instantly went from innocent girl to hot sex kitten, something which I thought stretched the bounds of credibility. I felt like I generally understood Edward as the brooding, aloof hero, but what I never could really grasp was his compelling need to protect Freddie. What under other circumstances would have been an endearing bond between two brothers, ultimately felt like obsessive behavior on Edward's part. Also his assertion that Florence was Freddie's last hope of regaining some respectability in society just didn't ring true. It seemed to me that any young woman could have filled the position as Freddie's wife, considering that he never lacked female admirers. In the end I just found Edward too passive for me to be able to fully respect him. I actually liked Freddie more, because I never felt like he was trying to hide behind false pretenses, and admittedly he was a rather charming scene-stealer. This was my first read by Emma Holly and although I can tell she has talent as a writer, it is possible that her writing style simply may not be for me. However, I'll wait until I've read the sequel, Beyond Seduction before making further comment.

Note: Beyond Innocence reads much like a traditional historical romance, but in my opinion the sexual content and explicit language (both of which some may find offensive) rather pushed the boundaries of what most readers would consider traditional, giving it a mild erotic feel. There is also one passionate M/M kiss which, again, may offend some.(less)

Probably 3 1/2. Interesting to see a gay character featured so promanently in a romance novel. It didn't take away from the story at all. Wanted the story to be a bit more though

Another steamy late-Victorian romance from Emma Holly. I liked this one a little less than Beyond Seduction, mostly because I just didn't connect with the heroine. A vicar's daughter, she was too good, too innocent, to "pure" to be much more than a Mary Sue. Holly describes the heroine so often as a ripe peach or plum that it made me want to swear off stone-fruit forever. However, the sex was steamy and the hero was hunky. Es la única pega que le he encontrado a la novela, aunque no es pequeña ya que le quita bastante credibilidad a todos los remordimientos de Edward cuando siente que se ha enamorado de Florence, la que se supone es la prometida de su hermano.
Dejando de lado este punto negativo, la novela es bastante buena. Los momentos dramáticos son intensos y van in crescendo a lo largo de la narración hasta culminar en el instante en que Florence descubre el engaño al que ha sido sometida por parte de todos para que se casara con Freddie aun cuando éste es homosexual, al mismo tiempo que se siente traicionada por Edward después de haber vivido una intensa noche de pasión entre sus brazos.
La trayectoria emocional de ambos personajes es intensa.
Por un lado empezamos con un Edward frío preocupado por la única persona que parece conseguir que muestre algún sentimiento, su hermano. Pero poco a poco vamos descubriendo un personaje que es todo pasión y corazón, generoso hasta el extremo de negarse la felicidad a cambio del honor de su hermano.
Por otra parte, tenemos a Florence, una inocente muchacha de campo, hija de un vicario, curiosa y ávida de aprender, que va descubriendo en manos de Edward lo que es la pasión más ardiente.
Escena memorable la de Edward atado a las columnas de la cama mientras ella explora su cuerpo a conciencia. Caliente caliente. Solo por ese momento, vale la pena leerla.(less)

La storia è coinvolgente, scorre bene, non annoia mai ed emoziona come dovrebbe emozionare; l'eroe maschile è da urlo, soprattutto perchè mi piace quando uno all'apparenza freddo e rigido, che reprime i sentimenti, alla fine scoppia e dimostra tutta la sua passionalità e il suo lato più focoso (e che fuoco!); la tensione sessuale viene narrata perfettamente e sale alle stelle con la giusta intensità, ma troppe cose non mi hanno convinta.
E non parlo delle scene hot e dei termini espliciti usati con frequenza, perché questo in generale non mi dà fastidio, preferisco la schiettezza verbale, che le cose vengano chiamate con il loro nome, a quei nomignoli ridicoli che spesso leggiamo! E non mi ha scandalizzato neanche la celeberrima pag 206! Parlo più che altro di una marcatissima incoerenza di fondo, non tanto nella storia, quanto nella caratterizzazione dei due protagonisti.
Partiamo da lui: preoccupato fino alla noia della reputazione del fratello, gli impone una donna che mai potrà amare, si innamora della futura cognata, è disposto ad un sacrificio immane rinunciando a lei per il bene del fratello, ma poi con lei intreccia una relazione che definire sessualmente disinibita è poco, fatta di qualunque cosa si possa considerare intima, che va al di là della ragione e della decenza, ma si sente tranquillo con la coscienza, perché alla fine dei conti lei è ancora vergine?!? Sarà pure ancora come mamma l’ha fatta, ma con tutto quello che hanno fatto non è più esattamente innocente, no?
Boh, questa cosa l’ho trovata un po’ assurda, come francamente è un po’ assurdo anche il comportamento di lei, che ci viene presentata come una verginella innocente , ingenua ed ignara di ogni aspetto dei rapporti tra uomo e donna, che arrossisce solo se la si guarda, ma che a un certo punto, senza una reale ragione e con un cambiamento caratteriale senza alcuna spiegazione, ingiustificato e quasi repentino, diventa una ragazza disinibita, intraprendente, capace di farsi fare, e fare, cose assurde, che anche donne più navigate farebbero con maggiore riluttanza, senza quasi nessun tipo di dubbio o imbarazzo… Alla faccia dell’innocenza!
Ho trovato, inoltre, le scene di sesso poco spontanee: facendo un paragone con un romanzo letto di recente e della stessa collana, Il mio nome è Passion di Lisa Valdez, dove forse le scene di sesso sono anche più esplicite e hot, ma sono giustificate da una passione sfrenata, incontrollabile e immediata che sfocia e che si palesa in atti impetuosi ed intensi, qui tutto sembra essere molto meno naturale, più meccanico e ricercato. Che poi per arrivare al dunque nel senso letterale della parola, dobbiamo aspettare la fine del libro, perché fino a quel momento è stato tutto un lunghissimo ed estenuante preliminare! Anche questo francamente è un po’ assurdo!
Il personaggio di Merry Vance l’ho trovato interessante e mi ha incuriosito molto, viene introdotto in maniera molto originale e spiazzante, come molto positivo è stato l’approccio con cui la Holly introduce l’omosessualità di Freddie. Non ci si aspetta che questo argomento venga affrontato in un romance di stampo classico, e già questo è encomiabile, tanto quanto come viene inserito questo elemento, in modo molto naturale e moderno.
Un romanzo eccessivo e non riuscito per molte cose, ma che ha dei lati positivi, che lo rendono comunque un romanzo interessante nel suo genere.(less)

I was in the mood for a good historical romance. I'm glad this is the one I picked up!

Florence is a woman trying to make her way in life. She comes to London looking for a husband. When she's introduced to Freddie, it's like a dream come true...until Edward.

There is so much I liked about this story. Normally, I get annoyed by historicals. They tend to be so cookie cutter. That's why I don't often read them. But this one had me engrossed after just a few pages.

This is one of those contrived, predictable plots with an ultra-innocent female character ("Oh my! What are you doing?") and a stereotypical duty-bound alpha male. This quote exemplifies the appeal of the starchy hero to me; I can feel how Edward's tightly coiled perfection enchants Florence, and tantalizes her with the possibility of him breaking loose. Beyond Innocence is a story about forbidden passion and I love how Holly expresses it. Florence swoons over Edward's top hat; he waxes poetic over her tiny shoes. It's all slightly fetishistic, but not in an off-putting way.

The problem I had with Beyond Innocence is that I never quite grasped why their passion was so forbidden. The story is that Edward is trying to find an acceptable bride for his beloved younger brother Freddie, convincing himself that such a bride will save Freddie from his unfortunate predilection for men. And he hits on Florence as the bride, only to be stricken with lust and fascination when he glimpses her partially dressed. (Another erotically fetishistic scene.) Why doesn't he just give up on the whole scheme right then and there and find Freddie another bride? I was irresistibly reminded of the opening of The Brothers Karamazon: "I knew a young lady of the last "romantic" generation who after some years of an enigmatic passion for a gentleman, whom she might quite easily have married at any moment, invented insuperable obstacles to their union, and ended by throwing herself one stormy night into a rather deep and rapid river from a high bank..."

The characters are lovely, including the kind and wistful Freddie (I wish Holly would write a book for him) and the passion goes up to eleven, so I still enjoyed this very much. I just wish she had put just a little more effort into making the situation make sense.(less)

Freddy era gay, tenía que casarse con una chica para que la sociedad no lo convirtiera en un paria, etc, etc., pensé que hallaría un poco más sobre esto, pero ciertamente no estuvo bien aprovechado.

La tía Hypatia fue un cero a la izquierda, más como un personaje de relleno, yo también creí que tendría más peso pero incluso hay unos capítulos es que uno pensaría que va a aparecer y no hace acto de presencia y no había manera que dejara de preguntarme dónde diablos la habían dejado.

Florence no me convenció, se suponía que era tímida y blablah, pero de pronto empezó a tener un comportamiento como muy fuera de su rol de tímida e inocente, no se lo creí ni por un momento.

Si hay algo que debo decir wowowowow es que me reí un par de veces, habían diálogos divertidos, y había ocasiones en que me reía de los personajes, como sea, me divertí y eso cuenta hahaha

Ammmmm iba a decir algo..... mi cerebro ha colapsado y lo olvidé.....
ok. 2 minutos después he recordado que me gustaron algunas de las escenas que tuvieron estos dos, no románticas y ciertamente cuando Edward al fin acepta su amor por Florence me resultó todo soso y poco creíble lolol, el punto... es que... el sexo... bueno -.- no fue del todo malo, que no del todo bueno, y al menos eso me deja con la idea de ver un libro erótico de esta autora, porque siendo sinceros, de pronto creí que se le olvidó que estaba haciendo un libro de romántica, pues parecía ser casi todo seeeeeeeeeeeeeexxx ... los personajes vivían pensando en el sexo wtf?

Bien, está claro que cuando busque un libro de la regencia no optaré por esta autora. Tal vez para alguien más, obvio que conmigo no funcionó.

C'est une gentille histoire sensuelle. C'est le genre d'histoire que j'affectionne tout particulièrement.
L'héroïne est une gentille jeune fille sans prétentions. Evidemment, elle a tout ce qu'il faut, là où il faut. Elle est une bouffée d'air frais dans Londres des années 1870. If you liked Passion By Lisa Valdez or The River Devil, The Irish Devil By Diane Whiteside then you will enjoy this book. This is the first book I have read of Emma Holly's. I really enjoyed it.

It really is a shame that Emma Holly stopped writing historicals, because a good erotic historical is hard to come by.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Holly's writing style, which is very detailed. I prefer authors who paint scenes in a descriptive way instead of a more simplistic style.

The storyline was good...I felt the chemistry between Edward and Florence and it certainly had me hurrying through to get to the good stuff. ;-)

OK Story, nothing creative or special. Nothing delighted me, surprised me or made me chuckle.

Edward was drawn to her from the moment he first saw her. Then, the tension for the rest of the book was Edward not following his heart. He could have found another woman for Freddie. Freddie didn't care. It was an ok romance novel that was easy to put down when I needed to go to sleep or to do something else.

This is my second Emma Holly book, and a complete redemption from the near trash that All U Can Eat was. I truly enjoyed this Victorian-era novel, about a poor vicar's daughter who decides to marry security and ends up matched to gay, likeable Freddie but in love with his brother, the unlikable and brooding Edward. Florence is a bit too blushing innocence for my taste, but I found her story compelling.

My brother's gay -- will you marry me?

Wonderful Victorian romance, IF you can get over the unintentionally funny premise -- the hero can't deal with his younger brother being gay, so he unearths the most luscious country miss he can find to marry the brother and "straighten him out." And of course the girl is as innocent as a lamb with a body like Venus, so after about two chapters the hero does a total 180 and is fully into seduction!
