A book length poem? A novel in poems? A poetic biography? None of the above. Deep, disturbing, and essential. You'll have to commit some serious attention, and it helps if you're familiar with Donny Hathaway's music--and really listen. As powerful an engagement with the psychic and social meanings of African American music as anything this side of "Sonny's Blues."
