He signed his name as Pedro Páez when he wrote in Spanish, Pêro Pais in Portuguese, and Petrus Paez when he happened to write in Latin. He picked up Arabic while he was a prisoner in Yemen, and Ge'ez while studying ancient manuscripts in the archives of the city of Aksum.

One can't help but admire the Jesuit missionary who wrote this Historia da Etiopia not to achieve fame, but to refute the outrageous lies someone else was writing about the country he had come to love. In beautiful 17th century
