eh...i've liked other stuff by vonarburg ( the silent city, in the mothers' land) but this left me irritated. there were a few too many science fiction and structural conceits going on, and they were all developed unevenly. some of the ideas were intriguing and there were some really poignant moments; the whole thing just didn't hang together for me. maybe the translation should get some of the blame.

This one is in my top three science fiction ever...Along with a book from some unknown much underrated french author, any one from c j Cherryh and of course the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy
