The next gripping novel by Mari Hannah.

THEY KNOW HE'S COMING. Two brothers from the same criminal family die within hours of each other, five miles apart, one on the edge of a Newcastle industrial estate, the other in a busy A & E department of a local hospital, unseen by the triage team. Both victims have suffered horrific injuries. Who wanted them dead? Will they kil

It is hard to believe that Mari Hannah's Northumbrian crime series is now at book five. It really is. This is one series that I absolutely have to read. It combines a very modern lead in Kate Daniels, great gritty crime for those of us with strong stomachs and it's set in the north.

Kate Daniels is a rather exhausted and over-worked DCI. Those around her notice that her judgement is not always spot on. She is very grumpy, over emotional and not entirely professional. Kate is in desperate need of

Killing For Keeps is the fifth instalment of the excellent DCI Kate Daniels series, and once again consolidates Hannah’s growing reputation at the core of the British crime genre, alongside the names of Denise Mina, Ann Cleeves and Sharon Bolton.

Killing for Keeps is the fifth installment in the Kate Daniels series - set in and around the North East - in this instance Newcastle and Blanchland. This is a hard-hitting and chilling case for Northumbria Police, the worst torture case they’ve ever seen.

Mari Hannah has raised the stakes this time - the prologue sets the scene for what will follow. And the first chapter (six weeks later) opens the door to a thrilling narrative when we see just what has taken place and what Kate and her team ar

This one left me kid of cold, even though I thought it had a strong start.

The case had a lot of potential but somehow got messy. Not everything made sense and even the fast pace couldn't cover that up.

Also, someone please tell writers of crime series that there surely are alternatives to protagonists having on again, off again relationships over the course of the series... it bores me endlessly, especially when nothing really changes in regard to character development.

This is the 5th instalment in a series featuring detective Kate Daniels although it doesn’t matter whether you’d read the previous books or not – I hadn’t. Immediately the reader is thrown into the violent, horrific world of Glasgow psycho gang members, retribution and torture. The images this brings up aren’t for the faint hearted and though I accept it was necessary to set the scene I didn’t enjoy reading about it. Neither do I like anything about gangsters. I’m surprised I liked anything ...more

With a strong sense of place, KILLING FOR KEEPS explodes into being with a gory gangland double slaying. Daniels is a modern heroine, who's deeply intelligent and her relationships with Jo, Hank and Bright deepen our understanding into her motivations and hunches throughout the case. The investigation is sprawling, with the gangsters one step ahead all the way - but Kate is determined to bring them down. It's an epic grudge match that's extremely satisfying and it's great to see a female lead in ...more

I’d intended reading Mari Hannah’s latest book – Killing for Keeps – in November last year and despite all the very best intentions from yours truly it has remained gathering dust on the bookshelf. I was reminded subliminally to pick it up in December when the Geordie penguin - John Lewis spoof - video was doing the rounds “I’m blind Dec, I’m blind” but it wasn’t until I had a few moments peace this week that I succeeded in not only wiping off said dust but actually reading it! It’s hard to ...more

Both victims have suffered horrific injuries. Who wanted them dead? Will they kill again? Investigating these brutal and bloody killings leads DCI Kate Daniels to break some rules, putting her career as well as her life on the line.

First book of this author I have read. The plot was good the story was OK. But the characters were, for the most part, not particularly interesting or sympathetic. I am going to get cranky here and probably very non PC but why is it necessary to get into someone's sexual orientation in a murder mystery unless it is germane to the plot? It seems like every third book I read where there is a female detective she is a lesbian. Guess what? I don't care. I stopped reading Patricia Cornell's books ...more

Loved Killing for Keeps - the latest in the DCI Kate Daniels series by Mari Hannah. It has a very tight plot beginning with two rather gruesome murders, and Kate's emotional instability on the personal front. The on again, off again relationship with profiler Jo is ever present with Kate yo-yo back and forth throughout the novel. I find myself rooting for their relationship as misunderstandings and work pressures abound. Kate's partner Hank support is very gratifying and he and Kate's ...more

I am a huge Kate Daniels fan (and of her creator, Mari Hannah) and I've felt that each novel in the series was getting better and better. This is the fifth one and I'm a bit torn about it. The authenticity of the atmosphere in the midst of a police investigation, the incident room, the murder wall, the discussions and rivalries in a police station remain impeccable. But the subject matter of gang wars perhaps does not appeal to me as much - it's hard to feel much sympathy about hardened ...more

This was another excellent read following DCI Kate Daniels investigation into gang warfare on her patch. The gruesome killings and the characters involved give this a difficult start but it soon becomes personal when Kate begins to lose control. The story has plenty of twists and turns and Kate and her trusted sidekick Hank Gormley end up flying to Spain on the trail of two opposing gang members. This made it more international in appeal as we got to see not only how different forces within ...more

O.M.G!

I have to wait far too long for my next fix. I'm desperate to know if Kate and Jo finally get it together. Hope so!!!!!! You'll have to read these books if you wanna know what I'm talking about. You won't be disappointed. They are extremely well written and the storylines are fantastic. You even get to know the characters really well. Great author I'm really looking forward to reading number six, actually just ordered it. Couldn't put it down.

Was really
looking enjoying this until the denouement which just had too many flaws, that could so easily, not have been there, with a good editor. First, insulin doesn't have a shelf life of a month...nothing like...Second, we don't need telling 3 times in almost so many chapters that Hank has lost 3 stones. Once the reader is assumed to be an idiot, there is no way back! That said, I retain a soft spot for the very flawed Kate Daniels!

Always enjoyed Mari Hannah's novels but this was the best one in the series, in my opinion. I really hope there will be many more. However, I would suggest, if you haven't read the previous novels, that you start with 'The Murder Wall'.

Good quick read, plot takes us from Newcastle to rural Northumberland to Glasgow &, very briefly, Edinburgh, and finally to Spain. Very brutal murders, and the police really despite their bravado are outwitted. The Kate/Jo thing is back on, it seems.

I absolutely hate gangland crime as a genre so that's why this is just a 4. Still the partnership of Daniels and Gormley work well.

When an injury on duty ended my career as Probation Officer, I began writing. I am the author of the Kate Daniels series published by Pan Macmillan. My debut, The Murder Wall, was written as a TV pilot for a BBC Drama Development Scheme - before the adaption. The novel has recently been nominated for the Polari First Book Prize. Before becoming an author, I fell in love with scriptwriting and ...more
