Time and time again I have heard people state their disappointment with this book. On some level I can understand where they are coming from. One of the first things I was taught about writing stories was that there were two necessary elements: some sort of conflict followed by a resolution or redemption. This novel never reaches a point of climax, and rather than ending in some sort of resolution it merely drops off, almost as if the author grew tired of narrating the story. I think that in...more

One of my favorite books. This is the first Stewart O'Nan book I've read. I've read several more since, but unfortunately, his other novels were not as good as this.
A story about family, as told from several different family members, on vacation at their family cottage by the lake. Rather a slow plot; not much happens, but the character development is SUPERB. Stewart O'Nan's character development reminds me a lot of King; and since I love King's work so much it only makes sense that I wo...more

A lovely yet curiously inessential book. A melancholy, gentle reminder that everyone has flaws and that, sadly, most of those flaws will be with us for life. O'Nan's care for this troubled little family--troubled, yes, but not more troubled than any other--is sympathetic, nonjudgmental, and restrained. Like the lakeside week of vacation he describes, the book left me feeling largely unchanged, yet not unhappy that I spent the time.

So...So. I haven't really decided if I liked this book or not. The formula was very different from other books. It covers one week in the life of a family, at their traditional vacation home, a year after their father has died from the varying points of view of the family members present. There is no real climax to the book or specific outcome. It is just one week of their life.

This book began with the promise of an interesting family with intriguing relationships. I found as I read that I kept wishing for more to happen. I kept reading this book for two reasons #1 I never stop reading a book halfway through. #2 There were several story lines that never quite came to their full potential. I kept hoping, and kept reading...

The story of the recently widowed Emily, a 60 something who is spending her last summer week at the family house on Lake Chautauqua. Her son and his wife and two children, her daughter and two children and her sister-in-law join her for a memorable week. Great writing…truthful style and interesting story. Honest ending.

an extended family spends a last week in the family's cottage at Lake Chautauqua before the cottage is sold; point of view moves among all the family members; a little slow sometimes but i enjoyed the different perspectives and the dredging up and analysis of various family dramas

I was really disappointed in this one. I felt like all the characters were so sad, but so selfish. I wanted to reach out and smack 'em! One gesture is all it takes, and none of these people seemed to get that! I wanted it to end so differently. Again, my sappy happy ending!!

This book is long, slow, and kind of depressing. It's well-written, but somehow not a very rewarding read. I'm impressed that an author can stretch seven days in which nothing happens into an incredibly long book, but I admire the achievement rather than the result.

overall very disappointing--especially with how much i loved "prayer for the dying." i'm all for a little angst, but when it's all that's offered and every imperfect character is selfish and unlovable i walk away feeling unconnected (and 500 pages later at that).

One week in the life of an extended family spending time together before the family lake house is sold. Brings out the insecurities of the middle aged children and the blame they lay on Mom. Ultimately, love and respect work their wonders - just like real life.

ugh, i didn't even finish this book it's so damn slow and boring. you'd think if a book is 500 pages, by page 100 it should have your attention but i just wanted to rip my eyeballs out.

I had just finished The Good Wife by O'Nan and thought I would also enjoy this story. I just had to stop. I didn't care about the characters and it went on and on.

Essentially a book full of character studies, or perhaps a single character study of a family. Very good, but if you like a traditional plot this is not for you.

This wasn't my kind of book! I didn't feel it was well written either. Basically, a book about one family and their relationships to one another.

This is good for a beach trip when you don't want anything deep. I found that I read for a while and then put it down and finished it later.
