I read this book for a third year Contemporary Environmental Literature course in university. Honestly my first read through of this book was painful, I hated it. But after re-reading one poem I clicked with the writing style and was really able to enjoy the poetry. It's not a style that I would normally go to (not that I'm one for poetry) but I', glad it was on my syllabus. Not an easy read, especially if you're not a fan of poetry. But once you start to delve into the themes and the language, there's a lot of beauty and depth in these poems. I live close to Steveston and have never been there, but after experiencing it through Marlatt's poems, I see a road trip in my future.
