Oh my god.
Let me start this by saying this series and the author deserve ALL the praise, hype, and media attention that Twilight and that hack Stephanie Meyer got.
First, I'll start by talking about Gregor and the Code of Claw, the final book in the series.
NO other book (save Redwall, when I was about 8) made me feel this strongly about a character and their (assumed) death. NO other book I know of potrayed such obvious (for the YA audience), yet such effective symbolism. NO other SERIES I have...more

I read this series when I entered middle school. I have to say, it is still (six years later) one of my favorite series of all time. Yes, I have read the Hunger Games Trilogy. However, I must say that it pales in comparison to this series.
I am not one to cry at books or movies, but I was brought to tears as I read the final two books of the series. The deaths of certain characters were portrayed well, and I got a real sense of the emotions the characters felt throughout the series.

This is my review for the whole series. There are 5 books and they are all equally wonderful. I bought this series about 3 years ago, but never read them. They just sat on my shelf. Every time I looked at the back, it just didn't draw my interest. I'm not sure why, but I just do not enjoy books that take place underground (City of Ember, Tunnels, etc.). The fact that this takes place underground initially turned me off. However, I decided to give it a try, and I am very glad that I did. The stor...more

AMAZING!!
I was drawn to this series from the very first sentence of the first book. I read it in about one day, and right after that I brought it back to the library and told the librarian, "I need the next one right now, please.." Two days later I was back for the next one.. and finished it that day. Only problem was, it was the weekend and I couldn't go back to the library for the fourth book. Worst part? It was a long weekend. :( When I finally got the next one, I was breathless. The series w...more

I remember how in Elementary and Middle School (I'm in High-school now) I would always check out the books, I found them fascinating. I love her writing, and have already bought a full set of the Hunger Games series (well, my parents surprised me with them). Now I just need to get this series for my ever growing collection of books. I'm going to my local library today to find out if they have them before I worry to much about school starting in 5 days. XD

Michaela started these books at about age 10 and was just a little too old for them when the last one came out (age 13), but I highly recommend these books for late elementary and middle school age. Under NY City is the Underland populated by giant sized versions of our regular ground creatures (rats, cockroaches, etc.). Suzanne Collins is an excellent writer, and she makes the story believable. My rating is for the whole series, which follows Gregor's adventures. The books are clever because th...more
I "read" (actually listened to) the entire Underland Chronicles over this last month. It was very interesting and was a great way to stay occupied on road trips. I loved the story and all of the characters. To my surprise, Ripred (I don't know if I spelled that correctly) was my favorite. I wish Suzanne Collins were writing more in the series and felt at the end of #5 that there wasn't a very good resolution to the overall plot line. But, I also think that all good things must end and you can ta...more
Gregor is a great kid and I love reading stories about him. His family has definitely dealt with their fair share of the unexpected. These stories incorporate a lot in a very readable, little package. I love that I can read them with my kids and not worry that they'll be presented with inappropriate material but at the same time be able to work up plenty of really great discussions about some pretty important topics presented in the books: sacrificing for the greater good, the dangers of science...more
I read all 5 books in about 3 or 4 days. I liked them although the end was a bit political--or maybe political isn't the correct word--but Collins was definitely making a statement. The Gregor books treat many of the same issues regarding human actions and war as her more recent books: the Hunger Games series. These are for a younger audience, although there are still a lot of war images and descriptions of violence. But the characters were well developed and the story was quick moving. So, over...more

These may be books technically written for children, and I did indeed pick them up when I was really young, but the things you learn, the things glimpsed and hinted at, the ones blatantly laid out and slammed into your face: they aren't pretty little fairy tales with lovely beasts-unicorns-and shiny pretty rainbows and pink satin bows and glitter and sequins, princesses and prince charmings, hah no. I guess that I expected too much from this youth fantasy series. It was very far fetched, so many adults and capable people having an 11 year old boy go to battle for them, etc. Like characters in the Hunger Games trilogy, Gregor (and his family) ends up emotionally, physically and psychologically traumatized and scarred for life.
Another series that focuses on the negative aspects of human nature.
There are five books in the series, only four came up when I searched on GoodReads.

Wonderful series for the reluctant reader! Wonderful for boys who love fantasy. Lots of cool information about insects and critters that live in the "underworld". Printing is wonderful for children who have difficulty with text that is too dense. Most importantly, even with lots of white space between lines, the text is not "dumbed" down. Great characters, wonderfully detailed world, wonderful although complex relationships between characters. Great series!
These books were interesting. The characters were relatable and vivid. It's like an Alice in Wonderland but darker.. but I mean that literally and not figuratively. He and his baby sister accidentally discover a world underground with giant rats and bats and spiders. Very geared toward the 8-12 year old boy, but I enjoyed it all the same. His care for his baby sister is sweet, and all the characters were very real to me. Good writing.
I love this chronicles!!! This is by far the best chronicles I've ever read!!! I read then about two years ago and at first I was critical about them but now I'm in love with them!!! When Gregor falls down a grate in his laundry room he finds the least expected thing anyone would think to find. Pale people who call themselves "Underlanders" I won't spoil it for you anymore then I have but I urge you to read these books at once!!!
these are really good books that are suspensful, humorous, and action packed. I would reccomend them to people who love adventure and thrills love to laugh and can make it past the sad stuff. I reccomend it for kids ages 9 to teens age 14. This is one of the best series called the underland chronichles written by suzanne collins. Book five is not included. book 5 is called gregor and the code of claw
Fun children/young adult read about another parallel world. The author was inspired to write these books by wondering what would happen if Alice in wonderland happened in new york city. (a boy falls down a hole in the wall and is faced with a giant cockroach and other huge bugs) As I read all these books back to back I wearied of them by the very end, but was defiantly entertained by them.
I loved all of them. You don't get a better series about a 12-yr-old. That actually surprised me in the second book - because I read it so long after the first - Gregor is only 12. I liked the way anagrams came into play in the fourth one, and Lizzie thinking Gregor was like Gorger.
I definitely recommend these books.
I definitely recommend these books.
Could NOT put these books down.....they caused what my daughter calls a 'book binge' - where you ignore all other responsibilities and get rather irritated when interrupted until you foggily come up for air - only to ask with an eerie urgency where the next book in the series is.... now I want to read everything by this author.

Even though this is a children's series, as an adult, I absoultely loved them! I was so disappointed when the series ended. I had really come to love all the characters and their adventures kept me on the edge of my seat. I've given this series to all my friend's children to read.

... same author as the Hunger Games, a little more fantasy (talking rats, spiders, cockroaches) ... similar to Harry Potter/Percy Jackson, there was a "prophecy" in each book that the characters would try to unravel. I quite liked the series. My son read the first but didn't continue on. My niece LOVED them.
