This was interesting because there's finally another seemingly normal character that can see spirits like Kimihiro. It'll be neat to see how that shapes up in the next volume.

This was an excellent volume with many interconnected short stories that focused on the known characters more than on various paranormal cases. It was great to see a softer side of both Watanuki and Domeki. Also, the secrets surrounding Watanuki became even deeper once he met Kohane-chan. Oh, and the part where Domeki could see through Watanuki's eye was very intriguing. I love that it gives them a connection of some sort...

On avance pas trop dans l histoire de fond. On a pas vraiment de client chez Yuko.
Il se passe pas grand chose en fait mais le tome est tres rapide, se lit facilement.

Today's post is on XXXHolic volume 9 by CLAMP. It is 176 pages long and is published by Del Rey. As it is the ninth in the long series you need to have read the first eight to understand the story. The cover has Yuko on the front and Watanuki on the back looking cool. The intended reader is someone who likes mythology, ghost stories, and great art. There is no sex, no language, and no violence in this volume. The story is told from Watanuki's perspective. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

Synopsis: xxxHolic by Clamp follows Watanuki, an orphan who is plagued by spirits. While being chased by spirits, Watanuki runs into a strange shop and meets a strange woman named Yūko. She turns out to be a powerful witch, and makes a deal with Watanuki to help him remove his "curse" in exchange for working in her shop and cooking for her. Hijinks and adventure ensue.

I can't remember now why I picked up the first volume of xxxHolic, but I'm glad I did. The series starts off in

xxxHolic Volume 09 by the mangaka group CLAMP has three stories all which reveal something about Watanuki's situation. By now Watanuki has come to realize he's probably not a normal teenage boy. It's not his missing parents per se that make him usual but they are part of the equation.

The first story introduces the power of dreams. Watanuki accidentally buys a dream and in return he has to sell a dream. The power and currency of dreams comes late in the series but resonates all the way through fr

*sigh* Bummer... the last couple volumes were pretty good and picking up... and then this one went back to random story lines that don't seem to have much purpose other than to keep the series going. At least with this series, that sort of dragging on works. But, this series is so much more interesting when things that are happening are really impacting the characters.

It's not that the series is bad... with these uneventful story lines, I enjoy the volume. I just like them way more when somethi

CLAMP, xxxHolic vol. 9 (Del Rey, 2006)

It's the usual, pretty much. The same running jokes, the same episodic feel, everything about xxxHolic that's had me annoyed the past few collections without any of the good stuff. Well, okay, some of the good stuff—the main story that ran through this volume was stronger than they have been recently—but I still think I'm done with this one for at least a while. **

I felt as though this was a slow paced volume with one constant, the shared eye. Every random encounter was linked when Doumeki told Watanuki that he also saw events with the shared eye. A few random stories that may or may not make second appearances and some minor re-appearance of a character but I felt as though this volume had very little impact.

Just reread this as I got the Del Rey copy, and wow, I really love this series, despite its somewhat weak start. Watanuki in particular has grown on me; I love his kindness to strangers and his spazziness now amuses me more than anything. Also, I have much Domeki love, but I suspect everyone does.

And!!!!! The crossover bit with Tsubasa! Awesome!

What is the deal with Himawari-chan - Yuko keeps making ominous hints about Watanuki's infatuation with her. Well, I didn't find out in this volume, maybe the next one.

I was also confused by Yuko's toast at the end. Did they know each other? Huh?

I think I'm going to end up re-reading the whole series once I have all the volumes, but that's OK, it'll be a pleasure. :)

A lot of Tsubasa references. I'm interested to see where it will go.

I loved the dream thread that ran through this volume. The way Watanuki treats Kohane is very sweet. I think it's the most I've liked him in the series. More maturing for him in a well-developed and subtle way.
