YA urban fantasy manga. Watanuki Kimihiro sees spirits; more than that, he's attractive to spirits, who sometimes want to give him chocolates and pine at him, but more often want to eat him. Fleeing for his life, Watanuki stumbles into the not-quite-real shop of Ichihara Yuuko, the Dimension Witch. Yuuko grants wishes, for a price, and she offers to grant Watanuki his wish to never see or be bothered by spirits again - his payment being to work for an unspecified length of time in her shop first, after school every day. Watanuki cooks and cleans, but Yuuko also has less mundane tasks for him, and for his rival/friend/totally-slashy-OTP-match-forever Doumeki, who has the power to vanquish the spirits Watanuki can see but Doumeki can't.

I love this to bits. Because I know so little about Japanese folklore, the philosophy and the supernatural world in this series feel utterly and fantastically original to me, although they're both strongly grounded in an existing folk culture, tilted into pop culture (the Child of Rain in her gothic lolita outfit, etc).

It's the characters I really love, though. Watanuki flails and complains and rearranges reality in his head and always does the right thing. He cannot stand Doumeki and seems to resent his very existence, but they spend every minute together. Doumeki calls Watanuki an idiot and coolly refuses to be impressed by anything he does, but he would die for Watanuki. He goes to epic lengths to protect him, and the only times we see him sweating are when Watanuki's hurt or in danger. Yuuko sees things nobody else can see, and she stares into darkness and tragedy with darkness in her eyes, and then turns around with a huge smile and a new complicated and indecently revealing outfit and waves a bottle of sake and gives Watanuki and Doumeki some new ridiculously huge task to do. The other major character is Himawari, who's a very sweet but not necessarily good-to-know girl whom Watanuki has a sparkly and unsubtle crush on. She makes the Watanuki-Doumeki dynamic especially interesting, because she's usually with them, she constantly claims that they're enormous friends, and she gives a constant and awesome contrast to the way Watanuki responds to Doumeki.(less)

A solid start to the series, which I'm still unsure of how it will work out. While it's overall humorous, it has a really dark overtone--the main character can see spirits and the female lead is a witch. I wasn't really certain what this series would be like, since CLAMP's work can be anything from incredibly silly to very dark and serious (X/1999 is the obvious contender for their darkest series).

xxxHolic is an original manga with a bunch of great ideas. And Yûko is amazing. I thoroughly enjoy reading about her... antics, and I can't wait to read the sequels.
Oh, and if the title sounds or the covers look weird to you, don't let them scare you. I was a bit nervous about the series at first, since it kinda looked and sounded like it was a book about druggy people or something, but when I read about Yûko in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, I really wanted to read more about her. I liked this book! I can tell it's going to be an interesting series! The artwork was beautifully detailed and enchanting, especially Yuuko's costumes. I like the instant chemistry between the characters. Yuuko seems quite shady, but not necessarily in a bad way, and Watanuki seems crabby - and not too bright, making such an open-ended deal with such a shady witch! Okay, let me start this off by saying that I'm a long-time CLAMP fan, and I count this among one of their better series. I just have this sort of personal attachment to this manga, so I may or may not be a tad biased.

Now, let's get started on everything I enjoy about this series. Firstly, I really love the art style and the way it contributes to the series itself. Now, let's get started on everything I enjoy about this series. Firstly, I really love the art style and the way it contributes to the series itself. The repeating motif of butterflies and smoke and the eternally gorgeous kimonos Yuuko dons speaks to its eerily elegant tone. The long, spindly limbs that seem to be CLAMP's specialty work better here than on any other manga of theirs, because the bizarre anatomy fits a story like this to a T.

Our protagonist Watanuki, like many other anime heroes, seems to draw his lot from this bottomless well of bad luck. Now, I'm reviewing this from the standpoint of someone who has read and reread the entire series, so believe me when I say this is one unlucky bastard. Throughout the story, he is both a magnificent source of comedy, which is derived from both his heaps of misfortune and his over-the-top complaints about said misfortune, as well as a magnificent source of drama. See, as his bind to Yuuko and her shop strengthens, the 'episodic' storyline seems to vanish. Events start to string together and, and being CLAMP, the budding plot gets intricately entwined with another one of their works, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. Both series as a result adopt a darker atmosphere, as well as some great character development. It was wonderful, seeing Watanuki begin to grow as a person over a course of time as a result of the supernatural mayhem he so resents.

The supporting characters are also wonderful, Yuuko especially. She drinks like a sailor, smokes like a chimney, and has this smug, devil-may-care attitude that clashes delightfully with Watanuki's constant overreacting. And yet, she can be shockingly wise. She nudges Watanuki into a lot of situations that seem pointless at first, but turn out to be relevant in the long run. A lot of other characters come and go, only staying in the spotlight for a small 'episode'. The ones that stay, though, enjoy a healthy dose of development as well, and serve to make the plot stronger.

What I also quite enjoy is the setting. I'm never going to get tired of the juxtaposition between urban society and Japanese folk lore. The way superstition can get weaved so closely with modern-day mindsets, the way ancient legend can exist side-by-side with technology and civilization, is not going to get old any time soon for me. The reoccurring themes of destiny and human nature were also a huge plus for me. All in all? I wouldn't say this series is for everyone, but it worked astoundingly well for me. I can't recommend it if you don't have the patience for the fact that it goes pretty slow at first or if supernatural themes aren't your thing, but if you're a fan of CLAMP and their style of storytelling then this is probably a must-read. Perhaps this is the only manga of CLAMP that I really adore, beautiful artwork, super cool clothes and intriguing plot. And there was no damsel in distress! More to bromance than anything.

Not to mention the scary as heck myth. Those myths were real, there are similar myths in Indonesia as well, but with slightly different stories. I bought this manga because I was read TRC first and they said that this book was the companion. At first, it's kinda hard for me to like this story because it's simpleness (that a word?). I've always wanted to read a manga by CLAMP. If you read manga, you kind of need to read at least one series by CLAMP. Just because. I chose to read xXxHolic (pronounced simply as "holic"; the xXx stands for a variable or a blank in Japanese).

XXXHolic has quickly become one of my favorite manga series. The creators are four women who started out as fan artists, and quickly became popular in Japan and the United States. In fact many of the top selling manga in the US are Clamp titles.

The X's in Holic relate to additions. Each story revolves around Watanuki and Yuko. She claims she will help Watanuki with his problems with spirits in exchange for his services in the shop.
Yuko's house is at the crossroads of many demensions. People are drawn to her shop with a wish. It is never quite so simple though. Having a wish and truly letting an addiction go are two different things. There is always a choice and a price to pay.

The first story deals with a young woman who stumbles across Yuko's shop she doesn't know why she is there but Yuko does. She has been having a little bit of siffness in her pinky finger. She can barely lift it yuko gives her a ring to wear and she leaves the shop. Yuko tells Watanuki she doesn't have much hope for success. Curious Watanuki follows the young woman. He finds that every where she goes she lies. Her lies are about her self ,her job , even where she is going.

Yuko is an intriguing character she is part mother to Watanuki, but also the source of many aggravations to him! She has him cook, clean and run errands for her and sometimes causes more problems than she solves.
This manga is published in the traditional japanese format of right to left, it's a little tricky at first but it's very easy once youve done it a few times.

Who this book is for: I would say 16+ for this book also lovers of ghost and paranormal stories. There are also great comedic parts to the series.

The series has progressed over the 10+ issues that have been released so far.

This series also crosses over with another Clamp series Tsubasa but you do not have to read Tsubasa to follow the story in XXXholic (less)

I've been a fan of CLAMP for a long time. I'm still hoping that they'll eventually finish off their series X (X 1999 in North America). I also really liked the Magic Knight Rayearth series.

Once I watched the Youtube video and figured out how to read Manga, I got the hang of it. The first couple of pages were slow going as I kept trying to read from left to right and forgot that I needed to hold the book backwards and upside down. Review of the whole series.
I saw the anime from time to time a while back ago, and it stole my attention. So when I read the mangga, I wasn't suprised that I really enjoy the art graphics. Also the content of japanesse old culture thingy, the non-human characters, and the foods (which Watanuki cooked). Other than that, for me the stories was quite good too, not just demons hunter spirits chaser kind of thing, but it had some deeper meaning too, i.e. to take responsibility of the choices you made, to grow up, what the meaning to have good friends, to be happy and so on. It so sad in volume 16, when Watanuki decided to take store, but hey... he accepted it and was happy to be doing it, so life goes on. No regret! *wipe a tear*

It connects to other CLAMP's stories, like Cardcaptor Sakura and Tsubasa: Resevoir Chronicles. I have seen most of CCS anime (love it, Sakura-chan and Li Syaoran is really cute) and some episodes of TRC (don't really get the story) ***of course you idiot, you only saw it like 5 times*** :X <-- imagine Watanuki yells and doing the strange dance, while Doumeki calmly sipping sake!! Aniway...., I got the idea of how these stories crossed-over. But for people who just read Holic, it could be quite distracting, bc it was the backbone of the story (who's Watanuki really was, his parents, who's Yuoko-san, Clow Reed, Fei Wong Reed, etc). But if you just "don't think too much", it was really an enjoyfull manga.

From what I remember, the anime has more room the show the detail graphics of the prolonged story (1 manga chapter turns into 24 minutes anime, more or less), and it's colorful graphics as well (imagine how beautiful Yuoko-san Kimono or the temples and parks sceneries). But reading the manga makes you realised the beauty of the story too. So do both!(less)

i really liked this book. At first I thought it was blah and I wanted to put it aisde but then it got really exciting. I learned, well I feel that everything that we have ever experienced is hitsuzen. Hitsuzen is unchangable, fated destiny. mystery, magic, twists....this book, once you open it, you won't be able to tell what's real and what not. you won't be able to tell whether you're dreaming or when you're awake.

the psychological impact of this book is strong. the philosophy behind this is inconclusive. I can't tell whether it's good or bad but one thing is for sure. Nothing happens by accident.

CLAMPS's crossover series with Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. Holic is where many of the explanations for TRC are fleshed out, and while it's possible to read one without reading the other, they'll make more sense together.

A pretty good series. Not their best, but good. The storyline seems a bit wandering at times and the ending had me confused that it was an ending. I did some research to find out if the next chapter existed or not, and as it turns out I wasn't the only confused one. Himihiro watanuki makes the mistake of telling "yuko", the owner of a shop that grands wishes, so then she has hold on him. Watanuki askes for a wish, to not see or be followed by the spirits that he sees everyday, and inreturn Yuko requires servitude form Watanuki, so he becomes her slave and watches her grant wishes to other people.

When I lived in the NW 'Burbs of Chicago several of the local public libraries had really very, very excellent collections of manga in their YA sections.
