Totally surprised that I would ever give any short story collection 4 stars. Short stories usually leave me pretty cold. This one I almost gave a 5. 4.5 solid. Emerson knows her period and the female perceptions possible for survival in the 16th Century. And not only in England either, where the majority, but not all, of these stories have a Northamptonshire location.
