Reading books to my five year old, I found this much more enjoyable than other recent chapter books for children I've read to him. The Littles family is well written. Here, Granny Little is feeling down because of her age. The problem feels real and not fanciful. The family pulls together to try to help her out by throwing a birthday party for her. Some of the difficulties they come across feel like real obstacles.

Could this have been published in the late 70s/early 80s as The Littles Surprise Party? That was the book I used to have.
