How I Came To Read This Book: I believe Robyn keyed me into the release of this book, but I was the one to go out and buy it, having LOVED Prep.
The Plot: The book spans about 10-15 years in the main character, Hannah's life, touching on key moments in her development that shaped her attitudes toward society, more specifically - romance and men. Things start to crumble in Hannah's somewhat idealized world at a young age when her parents split up (and also, the engagement and subsequent split ...more

I read this book because the library happened to have it checked in while I wait for my requests to come in and I read Prep, which I enjoyed enough, but not as much as the critics did. Perhaps it is merely the timing, but The Man of My Dreams (and I would agree with previous reviewers in advising you to ignore the title--it's not really about the man, anyway) really had me examining my own life thus far and what I have learned about myself through my relationships as Hannah has. I am 28 as Han...more

Hm. I liked it -- really, I did -- and I LOVED Prep. But what Prep was that this isn't was multi-layered. While it was Lee Fiora's journey, it was also a lot more than that, not to mention a thrilling roman a clef, though Sittenfeld denies this.
Here, we're presented with a rehash of Lee Fiora, and quite honestly, that's all we're presented with, only this time, she's less interesting and focused on one thing only: relationships with the opposite sex. I think that's what bothered me the most...more

I gotta say, I like Curtis Sittenfeld. She drafts characters that are undeniably adorable, if only, you realize later, as reminders of who we really are and where we came from. Hannah, her The Man of My Dreams protagonist, is no exception.
Feeling as thought she never quite fit in her family (a theme in Sittenfeld's books, I see - being the odd one out,) Hannah feels thrust out into the world at a young age when her parents split up. She goes on through her life fantasizing about the m...more

knew as soon as I picked this up that I would fly through it, and not for any lack of weight on the part of the novel; it's just that I LOVE CURTIS SITTENFELD. Something about her clean, guileless style clicks with me and I hang on her every word, even when what she is saying makes me uncomfortable, which happens kind of a lot; what she writes about hits close to home with my own myriad issues. Sittenfeld's tell-it-like-it-is narrators, both here and in Prep, seem to find that secret place insid...more

This book disappointed me on so many levels. I liked Prep ok so I assumed I might like this book...and I didn't. I was only mildly interested.
The main character, Hannah, is realistic enough- she's confused about love, blah blah blah no friends in college, loses virginity in college to a man she's not exactly attracted to, and loves another man for several years- her "eccentric" cousin Fig's ex. Basically, we get Hannah at 14 and through college up to 28...not a lot happens. She ha...more

before you judge this book by its title (i nearly didnt buy it cause it sounded so hokey) sittenfeld wrote 'prep'. i read that 3 years ago or so and i still think about that book. totally engrossing and moving. hope this ones the same. if it is, the title is meant to be soaking in sugar to make your teeth hurt. more later...
WHOA!
i got to page 116 and instead of the typical page 117 that would follow, the story jumped back to page 85. literally. pages 85-116 were published two times in my cop...more

Sittenfeld has done it again. Everything I loved about Prep, from its wit to its cynicism, was present in The Man of My Dreams.
The novel focuses on the life of Hannah Gavener, from her parents' separation and divorce in 1991, through college, until 2005. From the get-go, Hannah feels as though she's somewhat of a celebrity expert on love, as she follows Julia Roberts' engagement to Kiefer Sutherland. Just as that falls apart, she ...more

The Man of my Dreams follows main character Hannah Gavener over the course of 14 years. In the beginning of the book Hannah is a shy 14 year old girl whose family problems are making her doubt her own future. As the book progresses we see Hannah in college, in her first job, and slowly beginning to get a better sense of herself. We see Hannah's triumphs in love, her romantic stumbles, and her general uncertainty about what the future may bring. Possibly the best part of this book is how relatabl...more

i hated Prep so much, i had to see how sittenfeld's second novel worked. and i got a nice surprise.
turns out, she learned a lot. hannah, the protagonist here, is vaguely similar to prep's lee, but she is infinitely more likeable. in an interview, sittenfeld said one of the differences was that she learned something in writing - if she questioned it's presence in prep, she left it in, if she questioned it this time around, sh...more

I know that a lot of people find Curtis Sittenfeld's characters too unlikable, but I think they are just so honest and real that they freak people out. I wasn't sure if I'd like this book as much as I loved Prep, but I think it's actually much more maturely written. I was sucked in immediately, as with Prep, and just find Hannah's insights to be, if frustrating or wrong sometimes, also quietly profound. I could barely put it down. It kept me up at night because I just couldn't stop reading i...more

Like Prep, this book was addictive and page-turning the whole way through, but it really felt like just another variation of Prep. How many times can you create a main character that is simultaneously so relatable and so frustrating that you just want to shake her and yell that she's wasting her life without it starting to become stale? I mean insecurity is definitely a part of life, and we all go through it, but it seems unbelivable to me that Hannah would be that insecure for so long. By the e...more

I picked this up after not being able to finish Prep. And I liked this one enough to actually finish it. The Man of My Dreams is probably fluffier than Prep, a little more chick-lit-y because of its focus on relationships instead of a multi-layered look at so many more things interacting (relationships + class + age and esteem, etc). However, this is what made this book easier for me to relate to, which is a particular personal thing coming from my experiences more than anything el...more

The main character like in the authors first book,"Prep", is a self-involved, miserable, jealous, personification of every negative stereotype that men say about women. This book sends an awful message to women. You are not incomplete without men. There is no perfect man and you do not have to pretend to be something you are not to get one and keep one. The only character in the book that likes herself and has any fun is painted throughout the novel to be an awful, selfish person. I wi...more

I haven't read her previous book, Prep. This was a good book, given that I didn't really, at all, identify with the main character. It's interesting because it starts when she's about 14, and then gives you some snapshots of her in college, and then moves on to her life after college. I liked the snapshots structure. Kind of like a group of short stories but all about the same person tracking her development. But I have to say that the story that I thought I was going to read based on the b...more

I exclaimed at one point while reading this book...umm was she following me around in college? This story is universal and the protagonist has such appeal (and unappeal) that everyone can relate to her at some point. Awkward personal relationships, dysfunctional families, and romantic expectations abound. This is a bildungsroman novel in the guise of chick lit. I read some reviews that say its a commentary on marriage or the eternal quest for the perfect partner. Did they even read this book? ...more

Maybe it's not Curtis Sittenfeld's fault. Perhaps there's no book that she could write that I would feel hit the nail on the head the way the "Prep" did. But I can't help feeling let down.
"Dreams" had moments of greatness-when Hannah describes taking home an elderly family friend from a social engagement, the description is so vivid that you're in the kitchen with the charachters. Unfortunately, those moments are few and fleeting, particularly the attempt at the end to ...more

i really liked this even though it somehow felt like a book i shouldn't like. i have a really specific adjective in mind to describe this book and its attitude towards love, and it's on the edge of my mind but i can't quite pinpoint it. it's something along the lines of grim and depressing and a wake-up call, but not quite as negative as any of those... no-nonsense? matter-of-fact? those aren't quite right either. this is going to drive me crazy. anyway, i just tend to like girl books that are s...more

I LOVED Prep, so I had to read this one by Curtis Sittenfeld. The protagonist, Hannah, reminds me of Lee (from Prep), which surprised me because the cover and the title led me to expect this book to be a bit more chick lit than Prep. It's definitely not! Sittenfeld's characters are SO real...they are not typical, nor usually likeable. They all are somewhat socially awkward and overly self conscious. The readers get to know everything they are thinking and feeling. Rather than events happeni...more

I needed a summer fluffy read -which this is, a slightly deeper version thereof, kind of like Melissa Banks "A Girls Guide..."
This is written by a woman - duh. All this time seeing "Prep" on the shelves, I thought Curtis Sittenfield was a man. She doesn't make her heroine glossy or uber-successful in the end which was refreshing. I could definitely feel for Hannah the heroine and how she would sometimes rather stay in her pyjamas at night than bother to go out and her unre...more
