Businesses, understandably, look for technical expertise when hiring. Unfortunately, they often simply hope for the best when it comes to character, or “goodness.” But as Bruce Weinstein shows, there can be enormous financial and reputation loss when talented employees turn out to be dishonest, unreliable — or worse. In this practical guide to sound hiring, Weinstein ...more

Reading Bruce Weinstein’s The Good Ones made me feel like a Not-As-Good-As-I-Could-Be-One. I did not expect the book to be so personally challenging. I’m not arguing that it’s judgmental, but between the what would you do options, the personal narratives, and the interview questions, I really started thinking about what high character means to me and how I would evaluate it in other people. Whenever I started to feel like my character was questionable, Weinstein would include a personal anecdote ...more

Excellent read, good reinforcement on coaching /leadership and the character of good people.

I have been following advise I received from basketball coach in high school to define character "do what is right when no one is watching". I have asked the question during interviews and in all these years only one candidate has come back with an answer like this.

East read and for those in a leadership role or looking for a leadership role, make the time to read, you will gain insight to peoples charac

Well written, engaging and easy to read. The Good Ones presents ten often overlooked qualities of high-character employees. Bruce Weinstein provides practical examples of how High-character employees in the work environment positively impact work relationships, employee satisfaction and the bottom line. I especially recommend this book for HR professionals and hiring managers, but it is also insightful and practical for employees and job seekers. In addition, I don't think it's a stretch to ...more

Another wonderful work from The Ethics Guy. No only does he give real life examples, but his own mistakes are included. Along with the stories of others are ways to evaluate job candidates, current employees, and ourselves. Some books about values tend to set the pedestal so high only the saints can obtain and other books so low that whatever you do is okay. This book reminds us we all have strengths while we continue striving.

A great read over 10 days. One day to ponder each characteristic.

I feel it would be unethical to rate this book, since I wrote it, but I can say I think you'll love it!

Recommends it for: all professionals, business people
With a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Georgetown University, Weinstein combines all of the intellectual horsepower of an academic with the flair of a writer for Rolling Stone Magazine.

In this book, Weinstein tackles the challenging topic of ethics in the workplace using real-world examples from actual interviews instead of hypothetical examples. The practical treatment of his Ten Crucial Qualities of High-Character Employees is what makes this book so readable and his subject so accessible. The author

I was looking more for a how-to be a better employee. This book has little stories about people being good employees. In the forward it says it's for employers and employees... But it's more of a hiring guide for an employer. It also discusses the issues with asking questions in interviews that are considered invasive to figure out if an employee is a good employee.

I didn't find this book helpful.
