What a Way to Start a Brand New Baby’s Life!
Claire can’t believe that the very day that she gives birth to her first child is the same day that her husband decides to leave her. What Luck! Marian Keyes pulls out all the stops in the development of the story and the characters. Claire and her husband James have been married for a few years and are living in New York. She thought things were going just great, then out of nowhere James announces that he’s fallen for someone else an...more

I picked this book up after I finished Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married. Like Lucy Sullivan, I enjoyed Marian Keyes chatty style. Reading this book feels like a chat with a friend and I found that I got to know the main character very well. Marian Keyes excels at character development.

As you probably know, this story is about Claire, a 29 year old Irish woman living in London. A few hours after she gave birth, her husband James announces that he doesn't love her anymore and that he ...more

I'm having ups and downs with this so far. I really love Marian Keyes humor, and that's what keeps me going. I'm having a hard time totally caring about Claire though, and I'm not sure what I'm missing. I almost feel like there is just too much of her that I don't know. I know her sisters better than her. I can't identify with the new mom thing, or the husband leaving her thing, and I'm just not finding anything to latch on to. Except the drinking, as I've done a bit of that lately myself ...more

A Christmas present from Megan...I was really excited to read this because it is the story of the oldest Walsh sister.

The very day she gives birth to their first child, Claire is told by her husband that he is leaving her for another woman. She returns home to Dublin, seeking the comfort of her crazy and quirky family, while she figures out how to deal with this abrupt change in her life. Something I love about Keyes' writing - although her books are most definitely of the chick-lit...more

Of course I would love this book just because of it's genre but this is definintely at the top of my list. I guess because I'm actually going through such a similar situation as the character's (minus the baby) and so it touched the heart very closely. I love Claire's humor and how this book made me feel like I wasn't the only person out there going through a rollercoaster from murderous anger to guilt to all the other millions of emotions out there. It's all perceived as normal.

Watermelon was actually the first Marian Keyes book I read. In this book, Claire is a woman who has everything she ever wanted: a husband she adores, a life with interesting friends in London, a great job, and a fabulous apartment. However, on the day she gives birth to her first baby, a daughter, her husband James informs her that he is leaving her. Shocked and depressed, Claire slinks back home to Ireland to a family who cannot figure out what Claire "has done wrong to make her husband...more

Full of quick, clever, sarcastic humor. Claire's (the star of the story) inner dialogue was, often times, laugh-out-loud funny. Such a quirky character with a tendencey to get worked up over nothing---a conversation that hadn't happened yet--a situation that "could" take place. I found Claire to be delightful (if not a bit like me :)) I am sure my husband would agree!:) But....haven't we all found ourselves playing out a scenario that could present itself. It is always good to be...more

This is a great book. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars was because there were SO many typos in it. I don't mind a few, but it was insane that a best selling book in a repeat printing would have so many errors in it.

It was pretty easy to tell that this was Keyes' first novel in parts, but for the most part I really liked it and can't wait to keep reading her stories. I'd totally suggest reading these books in order though... even though they aren't totally related, they sort o...more

I am quite random myself, skipping from subject to subject without segways, but Keyes takes it to another level. I just felt like yelling "get to the point!". Some of Claire's inner dialog was funny, but by page 30 I was skipping over large chunks to get to the actual moving plot line of the book. A couldn't whole heartedly recommend this to anyone looking for a mindless chick book that is a quick read, cause it was too annoying to be mindless. Marian Keyes came highly recommended ...more

Someone left this book in the lobby of my apartment building so I picked it up to read. I understand why it was abandoned. I don't understand Marian Keyes' popularity. The main character was vapid, the secondary characters one dimensional, the plot improbable and the writing mediocre. Often I would throw it across the room in frustration.

Don't bother. I think I will take it back down to the lobby and leave it where I found it.

I love these Marian Keyes books about the Irish Walsh sisters. This is the first one in the series, about the life-altering romantic upset experienced by the oldest sister Claire. It's chicklit, but it's hilarious chicklit with a wicked Irish sensibility.

This was a lovely, entertaining romantic-comedy style novel. This is not the first Keyes novel I've read, and it won't be the last. Like most of her fans, I quite enjoy her chatty writing style, and I agree that she's marvelous at character development. It took me a long time to get through this book (does she ever write some monster-sized novels!) but I'm glad I read it, and I have to admit that, although some events were reasonably predictable, I hadn't guessed the final outcome. A fun rea...more

I love these tales of the Walsh family and their romantic upheavals. This is the first and it seems I am reading through the series in reverse - but not to be troubled. All are most wonderful and worth of your time, if you enjoy contemporary romance novels.

I really enjoy all of Marian Keyes books, however this one was a struggle to get into because it gets off to a slow start. Not one of her best but still a good easy read.

Watermelon was great plane reading! I've now read 2 of Marian Keyes' books, and I've had similar reactions: I expect 'light and fluffy' chick lit, but her stories always seem to dig a little bit deeper, deal with issues more realistically, and give me more satisfaction than other books in this genre. I also find myself annoyed with the flightiness and weakness of her characters sometimes, but they seem to come out stronger on the other end - as Claire did at the end of this book. I think that's ...more

I haven't read much chick lit. In fact, this is only the second book I've read in the genre, the first being Emily Giffen's Baby Proof. I was much more impressed with this book than that. Marian Keyes is hilarious, is the dryest of all possible ways. And, also, this book was much more empowering. Want to be really, really pissed off by a make-believe man? And see him really get told what-for by the woman he left, on the DAY SHE GAVE BIRTH TO THEIR DAUGHTER? Srsly. Anyway, I liked it. I ...more
