This is an informative and well-written book by two pediatrician moms. The information and advice is practical, detail-oriented and explained in a conversational tone. I would recommend reading this one during the last trimester of your pregnancy--after you're feel comfortable with all the labor and delivery information given in whatever prenatal texts you've selected.

One thing I've discovered about pre- and postnatal literature, it is easy to become overwhelmed with information ...more

Some books written for new parents try to cover too much info at one time and have a definite bias when it comes to parenting styles. You think you're getting some quick tips when what you're really getting is an encyclopedia full of advice with a tinge of propaganda. Not this one! The topics were relevant, the authors entertaining, and the explanations, succinct. The chatty tone of the book made it read more like a magazine and less like a clinical reference book. I liked that they presented b...more

I'm on a strict diet of baby books, which I haven't decided is a good or bad thing yet.

This books was a pretty good one. I added it to my list based on someone's review that it was the closest thing a parent can find to an instruction manual for your new baby. Since this is the first post-birth book I've read, I guess I can agree with that review.

Not too long, but detailed enough where I need it.

A family member gave this to me and I loved it! Practical, informative, and intelligent. I marked some sections of other childbirth/pregnancy books for my husband to read, but I handed him this one and said that he needed to read the whole book. I really enjoyed it and found it very useful, particularly for someone like me with almost no experience with babies or small children.

I was expecting more from this book. The chapters were relatively short reviews on everything from diaper changing to detecting a fever. The majority of the book was common sense so I don't understand why it took 2 board certified pediatricians to write it. Chapters 18-20 discuss common health concerns parents may have. This was the best part of the book, although it primarily covered things that parents tend to over-react to and need not worry about. The remaining chapters were entirely useless...more

A really great book that focuses on the early days and weeks of an infant's life. Covers issues in depth which other, more general, parenting books skim through in a chapter or two. Easy and fun to read, too.

This had some helpful basic tips. Helps make this nesting mom-to-be feel a little more prepared...although I don't think there's a ton I can do besides just bring our little man home and follow our instincts...

This book really helped me prepare for the birth of my first baby. I definitely used many of the tips and will probably at least look through it before the next one comes!

One of the best baby prep books. Lots of info without an agenda.

For some reason I was really enchanted by the picture of the baby on the cover of this book while I was pregnant. It made me tear up once, even, on a sentimental day. Then we had our baby and what do you know, I felt like she looked a lot like this cover-image baby in her first days. OK, so maybe newborns do kinda tend to look a little bit alike. And maybe it's just me. Either way, I remain enchanted -- now with a real baby!

Oh: It's nicely written too. Friendly and conversational but...more

This was a good starting point for someone who has no clue about babies (like me). Everything from how to change a diaper to how to give a bath is included. Because the book is so basic though it did end up creating more questions in my mind (like the book says newborns need to be fed every 2-3 hours in the beginning...but the authors never say how long "in the beginning" lasts for). The tone is friendly but my husband found it annoying. I would recommend this as a starting point for f...more

This book really helped with knowing what to expect when my baby arrived. The book covers all the ins and outs of breastfeeding vs. formula, all the intricacies of poop and pee, burping, and spitting up. It also covers the different kinds of cries, cloth vs. disposable diapers, bathing, clothing, car seats, and gives a play by play of your infant's body parts. I would recommend this book to any pregnant woman and especially to first-time mothers. This book will leave you well-informed. Make sure...more

Easy read-written by pediatrician/mother they made the medical jargon not seem so intimidating. I will definetely use some of their advice when Baby R comes home.

Great book for a first-time mom-to-be. I'm glad I read the whole thing, and read it before the baby came so that I feel at least somewhat prepared. Gives a lot of good, practical information on things that might never have occured to me. I feel good going into motherhood having read this, and will definitely take it to the hospital with me. And I know I'll be referencing it a lot in the months to come.

I don't think I realized how clueless I was about things I thought would be "simple" until I read this book. I highly recommend it to any first time parents-- especially those who haven't been around a ton of infants-- really, truly informative and helpful without being scary, as some childbook/infancy books tend to be...

This book is an absolute must have for any new parent! It covers all of the basic info that you might not know about the first few weeks with your baby like feeding, changing and clothing - all the stuff you didn't even know that you didn't know! This will be come a standard baby shower gift for me!

Wish your kid came with an instruction manual? This is it. I read this in the last few weeks of my pregnancy, and because of it, felt a lot less unprepared in the sleep deprived delirium of that first month after birth. Cleverly written and entertaining. I love it.

This was a good overview of life with a newborn, good to read before the baby arrives. Places a realistic view on many of the idealistic ideas you hear about. Very down to Earth. We'll see if I actually find it useful once my baby is actually here...

I didn't really read this book word for word, but I skimmed it pretty thoroughly and didn't really learn anything new from it. It is pretty compact with lots of facts which can be good and bad. It was a little overwhelming, but informative.
