Wax on.... Jen Nakamura Taylor thought she left behind her awkward past of growing up half-Japanese, half-white in a small Southern town when she moved north to produce a popular Chicago television show. But when she gets word that her Southern Belle cousin is marrying Kevin Peterson, the very boy Jen loved-with-a-capital-L for years, she realizes she can't run from her pa...more

Notes from BookCrossing: I love to read junk food when I travel, and this book seemed like the perfect candidate when I was packing for this business trip. I'm in the NY/NJ area for the week, and read this book all day yesterday. It was a great accompaniment to iffy Denver weather and not knowing if I'd get out of town or not! I did, and just in time -- my husband said they had almost a foot of snow!

Yeah, it's lite and it's chick lit, but I really enjoyed this one! Sure, it's formulaic, but it's...more

Anyone who remembers the 80's will laugh out loud reading Dixieland Sushi. Jen Nakumura Taylor is a TV News producer in Chicago but she has to make a road trip back home for her cousin Lucy's wedding in Dixieland. Jen drags her friend Riley (aka The Collins for his resemblance to both Firth and Farrell) to the wedding. Throughout the trip she recalls growing up in her half Japanese half white family in the South. She also reminisces about Mr. Miyagi, jelly shoes, friendship bracelets, Dallas and...more

i read 'i do but i dont' and i thought it's goanna be as good as this one...but what a major let down....this book has so much potential..the story is real common in the fiction scence but Cara has a knack for making ordinary things great..why 2? i hate how the story keeps going to the past! i mean that made the story bland.i keep skipping to the present so it was a really fast read..i love the story! i really do i just hate how some of the part does not attract me like it should,... (SIGH) like...more

It's an okay read though it tends to be boring at times. I decided to read this since its title really interests me but i was disappointed with this one since i'm expecting something extravagant to happen or there is a certain twist on the story but i'm definitely wrong. It has a very predictable plot and i can't relate much to the stuffs that's happening on the story since it has little flashbacks on the 80's time and i'm not definitely an 80's baby. Though predictable, some parts are still f...more

Hm... I would have to say that this book is very formulaic. The writing is horrible at times and the story un believable. It's very chick lit and not deep... at all. I didn't come away any better for reading this book. But I also didn't come away any worse.

I bought it for a beach read in Hawaii two weeks ago. Finished it quickly and immediately started reading something with a little more substance. And by 'a little more' I mean some, any type of substance.

But I'm sure some people like these b...more

A tale of a girl growing up half Japanses and Half White in Dixieland, Arkansas. Jen has a penchant for all things Karate Kid and quotes Mr. Miyagi faithfully (every chapter begins with a quote from him).

Jen has flown the coop of Dixieland long ago - but must return home for her cousin's wedding and hilarity ensues.

A nice amusing fluffy read complete with a road trip to Graceland and the United Colors of Benetton of Elvises or would that be Elvi?

Nice - made me laugh out loud several times!

This book was a typical, predictable chick lit romance, but those are the kind of stories I like. I really like the author's writing style and it was pretty funny. It was really fun to reminisce about all things 80s and I think she mentioned everything popular from that decade! Cute book!

Lots of fun - it was the references to stirrup pants, Karate Kid, Happy Days, Footloose, friendship bracelets and blue eye shadow that I loved. If you are a girl of the 80's then you are bound to enjoy the nostalgic factor :)

SOOO funny, I loved this book, it kept my attention, I really liked the point of view from past to present, Jen and her family were hilarious! but I loved the family because you could tell that they really loved one another.
Vicki
I loved this book! The author writes well and I laughed throughout the book. She also took me down memory lane at times, and her humor prompted me to have a good laugh and it was an easy fun read.
Karin
Not the most fabulous plot/story line, but if you grew up in the 80's, you'll enjoy the references of everything 80's! It made me laugh many times due to this alone!
Alexia
The story was predictable but all the 80's flashbacks and the grandmother's driving scene were too funny. Praise Jesus!!!

A quick easy, read. It was predictable, but still enjoyable. It brought me back to some good childhood memories.

I tried but couldn't get into this book. I just couldn't care about Jen.
Michelle
Cute, nonthinking kind of book. Similiar to her other book: Pink Slip Party.
Erica
It was a cute, although predictable story. Worth while read.
Natalia
Loved this book. Totally identified with growing up as a minority in a small town
Joanne
Great story, I liked the back tracking about her life growing up, it was funny. I really liked the Miyagi quotes, they really fit in the book. I wish the author wouldn't have spent sooo much time on the past, because the current story of Jen's life we engrossing.

This book is not that great....I got it to read on our trip to Florida as a "beach read" but didn't read it there...it's my "keep in my drawer at work to read at lunch" book now. It's a fun idea, but there is not much characater development, or thorough plot development at all. It seems like the main purpose of the story is to just be "wacky" and funny.

This is a cute story. Very upbeat and light hearted.

I grew up in Mesquite, Texas, which for those of you who like livestock shows, is the home of the Mesquite Rodeo. Ironically, Mesquite was named after Mesquite trees, only none of them now exist in the city, which is about fifteen minutes east of Dallas. No, I don't own a pair of cowboy boots, although I do own quite an impressive collection of black shoes. My Dad is a third-generation Japanese-Am...more
