When Marty Kalish fell in love with a married woman, he never imagined that he would end up in court because of it. Accused of murdering the woman’s husband, he is in a fight for his life. Things are adding up against him, he was at the scene of the crime at the exact time of the murder, and made the mistake of confessing to the murder to the police. The question is what did he confess to, and can he work enough magic to get himself out of...more

Great legal thriller that had you guessing from the very beginning. You have Marty Kaelish, a man who's involved with a married woman, Rachel. We know from the very beginning that Marty was involved with the murder of Rachel's doctor husband, but we don't know all the details. An interesting story unfolds in this legal thriller. Some great characters in this book and while a couple of details in the story were harder to believe, it was put together and unfolded quite well.

A legal thriller set in the current time and recounted by protagonist Marty Kalish, with frequent flashbacks to prior events. Single bachelor Marty met Rachel Reinhardt at her house on Thursday nights while her surgeon husband worked late performing surgeries at the hospital. One Thursday night, both Rachel and her husband are home when Marty arrives, and as Marty watches, the surgeon abuses his wife. Marty comes to Rachel's rescue, disposes of the surgeon's body and sets up a working-late-at-th...more

I typically read almost 100 books per year, most of them fiction. I picked this one up on a lark and am so glad I did. What a novel! From page one, I was enthralled in the story. I held my breath during the fresh approach that Ellis uses as a story-telling technique. We watch the action unfold through the eyes of the main character and we think we know what has happened. The murder takes place early on and we "see" it happen. But did we see everything? We aren't sure. In fact we aren't sure unti...more
This Edgar Award winning legal thriller is a gripping book--not sure whether to give it 4 or 5 stars, but i'm getting stingier with 5. Neverthless it is very well-written, and the plot has twists and turns throughout, right up to the end. Bob discovered this writer recently and is now working his way through all his books. (I think he's written 5 so far.) I will probably be close behind him.
Investment banker Marty Kalish is prosecuted for the murder of his married lover's abusive husband and throughout this great courtroom thriller, I wondered who or what to believe. Interesting plot twists kept me reading late into the night, A book blurb I read compared the main character to Patricia Highsmith's Ripley - an apt comparison considering Marty's devious ways. Highly recommended!
