Assurément ...more

So this is one among a select group of books I keep in my book shelf.
I Gave You All I Had was the first novel I read about Cuba. It is a lot of things, beautiful, lyrical, graphic and blunt . There is sex, longing, unimaginable poverty, disillusionment.

But towards the end, it gets really confusing. I'm still not sure what was going on. What was real and what was fantasy?

However, I must say that I really, really liked the Poetry in this book. It moved my soul.(Side note: I should look into trans

I read this in English, and it blew me away. The book made me experience the life I could have had if my father had not spirited me away from La Habana back in 1960. This book was published in 1996, but it is just as relevant. The life of those in communist Cuba will make you reconsider your own, and Valdes's style (a mixture of movie director Pedro Almodovar and writer G. Cabrera Infante with her own inimitable femist view and lots of erotica) is a joy to experience.

I picked this up out of curiosity when it wandered into the house and I was ready to dismiss it as just more Latin Chick-Lit fluff, but it isn't. The whole novel is written on two levels, one the life of the girl, the other the symbolic relationship between Cuba and the U.S., with the "love lost" theme and the two lovers being the separation which occurred at the Communist takeover. It's a really sophisticated literary device.

I think it stops just short of being a real masterpiece because Valdes

Great read from a Cuban perspective of an author who left and lives now in France. I was totally drawn in despite is sometime raunchy narrative but the other side of the dynamic of love and loss completely drove me to become invested in the character. Some FANTASTIC one line sentences to describe the emotion that transcend the story itself and strike that universal chord. Would love to find more from Valdez in English.

I read this quite a few years ago. I remember laughing out loud because it had been a while since I had "heard" all the phrases and typical sayings that Cubans use. It was a sad story, that of a woman, that depicts the struggle and hardships of the Cuban people under the Castro regime, and how they manage to make the best of it.

Recommends it for: Self-important people
At first, I like the bouncing, lyrical style of the book but pretty quickly was turned off by gratuitous, violent and unsettling sex scenes. Not sure why I bothered to finish the book.
