Beginning shortly before the turn of the last century, there was a noticeable trend towards the ambiguous in modern Brazilian literature. Writers such as Machado de Assis and Jorge Amado have both explored the use of the unstated and the forced compromise between extremes that have grown to be so crucial to the modernist movement. No Brazilian author, however, has mastered ...more

This is the set of short stories from the author of `The devil to pay in the Backlands' written in 1962. There are 21 shorts consistently of about 10 pages long (i.e. no particularly long tales). They appear to be based around the 1960 or perhaps earlier in Brazil. They are poignant vignettes of the life and times mainly of country folk I'd say; they are imaginative but not surreal or magical realismesque. They have elements of Sartre, certainly some Marquez but not particularly revolutionary. T ...more

Hard to find, and easily my most valued book acquisition in recent history. I was primarily interested in the title story of this collection...its small but packs a resounding punch...Im still working on the other stories , but fully expect to be floored. If you can't find it you could potentially borrow...though it may involve begging, pleading, and possible blood-letting on your part (be forwarned). :P

I liked the events in the story , but I didn't like the ending . I felt that the son is committing the same mistake of his father ;running away .

João Guimarães Rosa (27 June 1908 - 19 November 1967) was a Brazilian novelist, considered by many to be one of the greatest Brazilian novelists born in the 20th century. His best-known work is the novel Grande Sertão: Veredas (translated as The Devil to Pay in the Backlands). Some people consider this to be the Brazilian equivalent of Ulysses.
