Messner, Kimmel, and others more or less opened up the field of masculinity studies, and this is a good starting point for discovering their work. Don Sabo's work on domestic violence, Laurence de Garis' work on intimacy in a boxing gym, TJ Curry's piece on bar fights and the dark side of college athletics, Alan Klein's piece on Mexican baseball and masculinity, and Brian Pronger's Homosexuality and Sport are all fine short pieces. Over 20 years since it was first published (it came out in 1990) this remains a classic of the field, essential reading for my undergraduates, and in the case of Dave Whitson's openiong essay - 'Sport & the Social Construction of Masculinity' and Bruce Kidd's 'The Men's Cultural Centre: Sports and Dynamic of Women's Oppression/Men's Repression' vital ways into making sense of sport's key relationships to masculinity.
