One wouldn't call Philip K. Dick a literary stylist. He writes in a style that is pretty much straightforward science fiction genre. But what made Philip K. Dick great was the driving force of the mind behind the prose, the ever-curious, questioning, mad mind of a man almost pathologically obsessed with metaphysical truth. What is real? What is the nature of ultimate reality? What does it mean to be human? What makes us human?

In popular culture, Dick's exploration into such questions can be...more

I Am Alive and You are Dead: A Journey into the Mind of Philip K. Dick, Emanuel Carrere, Picador, 2004

This book is not just a biography of Philip K. Dick, famous science fiction writer; the movies Blade Runner, Total Recall and Minority Report are based on his stories. It is also an attempt to find out what made him tick, to get inside his mind. And that is a strange place to be.

Dick was born in 1928, near Berkeley, California, half of a set of twins. Evidently, his mother knew little ...more

What this french writer does is crawl inside the wonderfully weird and wired head of Phil Dick, a man who wrote books which displayed a pyrotechnical imagination. He wrote great books and he wrote duds - but there is something about how the whole life unravels then a single thread is left dangling; the coffee cup is moved to a different place on the desk and another world collapses into view.

What Carrere does in this book is give us an idea of what made this guy what he was. Ego, messiah,...more

This book is great if you are at all interested in the life of Philip K. Dick. The pacing and structure of the writing is incredibly good, especially considering that so many biographies of artists seem to unfold like, "And then they did this. And then they did this." Le Carre is excellent.

However. I have two warnings.

1. This book should have been called Spoiler Alert. Do not read this until you have read all of Dick's books that you care to read without any prior information. ...more

Emmanuel Carrere’s biography of Philip K. Dick: I Am Alive And You Are Dead - - a scintillating, fun and yet twisted take on the life, times, and writings of the author that many consider to be the most important name in American sci-fi. Carrere’s take on Dick’s life has a sensitivity born of curiosity and a skepticism born of professional respect. I felt like this biography illuminated the most important events and foci in Dick’s life and (all things considered) explained a lot of his w...more

I usually don't read a lot of biographies, but I needed a book for the subway ride to work and I figured it wouldn't hurt to be more clear about the whole "I'm a Roman in the early church dreaming this reality" business Dick had going on. Also this was the first book I noticed on the bookshelf in the living room that held any interest at all to me.

[later...]
Had to stop reading this in case I ever feel like actually reading Dick without having already glimpsed a thorough plot out...more

The ideas presented here go deep, way deep, so much more than I expected. If only I were a stranger to the phenomena described I could more easily dismiss it all as too crazy, but instead the book became a regular old abyss staring back at me playing psychic chicken. Then it got a little wordy and repetitive, just in time for me to sift the speed insanity from the blessed miracles. The concept of other present lives is with me for the long haul, and I suppose that I now realize it always was....more

This biography of writer Philip K. Dick imagines that his body of work is essentially one extended AUTObiography. This in itself would not be an interesting claim (eg, who would ever want to read a biography of John Updike?), but Dick's work consists of some of the most tripped-out science fiction ever written. The project is elegantly executed, in an extraordinary simulation of Dick's own style, and surely based on at least some facts. Reading it is an unusually thought-provoking experience.

While this book is liable to upset staunch Dick-heads, it is a thoroughly engaging exploration into the imagination that created the worlds of Blade Runner & Minority Report. It doesn't lay claim to be a totally factual life story, but it is an interesting look at this influential yet enigmatic author. No matter what you think you know, you don't know Dick.

Emmanuel Carrere also wrote The Adversary: A True Story of Monstrous Deception.

This is the only book I've ever read in one sitting. I got up in the morning, went outside at 9 a.m., and was done with at a 4 p.m. It's not short either. It's just really damn good. It's a biography written with all the drama and characterization of a fictional narrative. Truly a great book detailing the life of an American literary treasure.

A highly entertaining biography of Philip Dick. I would have given it a higher rating as it is a well written good read, but most of the material first appeared in the earlier Lawrence Sutin biography of Dick. Of the two the Sutin is more detailed. The Sutin is the definitive book on Philip Dick's life at the preseent time.

"Oh yeah, I've read Dick. He was pretty messed up." If you have uttered this statement, you have no idea how sick and brave and twisted and good this man was. Please read this.

This book? Was borrowed from Lisa and yet I still have it.

Also, it's a well told tale of a schizophrenic, dramatically imaginative storyteller.

A quirky biographical approach to Dick's life is offset by a rather routine overview of what we know already.

Fantastic read for all Dickheads.

Really. Completely ace, throws a lot of light on to much of his writing.

A quasi-biography. Don't remember much other than it's nowhere as good as Divine Invasions.
