And they all were right, Croatia is all they say and more. However, if you only limit yourself to gazing over azure sea or visiting a bunch of old ruins, you will never find out how the real Croatians ...more

OH. MY. GOD. Where has this been all my life?

A little background: I am a member of the so-called 'Dijaspora', a former Yugoslavian who emigrated during the war in the 90s. I've lived with my family in Canada for over 20 years, and it is always hard to explain to friends here our unique idiosyncrasies. Why so many slippers by your door? They're papuce, for guests. Why can't we open the windows in the car? Because PROPUH. Why are you wearing an undershirt during summer? Otherwise I'll get kidney f

Konačno nešto lepršavo, smiješno i vrlo zabavno.

Beautifully written. Full of humor and unavoidable truth.

"...There is the endless coffee-drinking, there are dangers of mysterious drafts that lurk behind every open window, there are mothers-in-law, ubiquitous pillars of society and the absolute importance of wearing slippers, but there is also the meaning of friendship and life being lived in a slower, more connected way..."

The author, Cody McClain Brown is an American who fell in love with a Croatian girl called Silvana. He met her in Oklahom

This is a book for anyone wanting to get to the heart of Croatia, and a guide to the problems of living and working there.
It is certainly the only book about the subject that has managed to encapsulate the country and the people. And the great bonus is that it’s very funny. It has it’s serious side, but most of it is extremely entertain tales about the author’s experiences.
It’s rare for a book by an outsider who has not made an exhaustive study of a nation to do this, but just as Bill Bryson wro

Baš mi je prijalo. Duhovito, toplo, podsjetilo me zašto nisam ostala tamo negdje...gdje sam boravila par godina, nego sam odlučila da se vratim kući.
check lista:
-dobronamjerni savjeti rodbine, prijatelja,

hahaha...this was highly amusing, very accurate and a great read if you want to get familiar with most of the the croatian lifestyle. I was pretty much reading everything I was taught to as a kid growing up. Good insight on how foreigners perceive us Croatians. I can't even point out the best part, maybe with propuh the murderous wind!! hahha that was a good one... anyway will definitely recommend it as a funny yet very educative guide on what to expect when being thrown into our colorful ...more

I enjoyed reading the book when I went to sea. I would not burned in the sun, I found a nice shade and read it during breaks between swimming. Writer Cody McClain Brown described the people of Croatian just as we are. Although in some small things I would not agree with them, because I love to walk barefoot and in the evening dissolve all the windows in the house to catch a little draft after hellish hot day. I have to admit that in the book just brushed some things that Croatian people are ...more

I really liked the book. Not only does it serve as a guide to understanding the Croatian culture, but it also gives an interesting perspective on some of the aspects of our everyday life that I, as a native of Croatia, very often take for granted. In that sense, it is interesting to have an insight into a perspective of a non-native. The novel is both amusing and didactive, at the same time.

I saw the book recommended on Goodreads by my friend Filip and I got curious. I'm happy to have bought it and read it as this book touches quite a few subjects that are dear to me and puts in writing quite a few of things I've gone through myself. Some of them are very specific to Croatia: Living with a Croatian woman, understanding the eccentricities of coffee drinking, having always people visiting, ...

The book provides a very good overview of what the real Croatia is like. Something you will

An amazingly fun book that succinctly, precisely, and above all -- hilariously dissects the experience of living in Croatia and Croatian culture and custom. I am a Croatian expat and the book will undoubtedly do marvels for my ability to explain where I come from, and why I behave and feel the way I do. For me, it was an eye opening (and eye watering, with tears of laughter) experience to read an unpretentious book about the Croatian daily life from the point of view of someone who is not ...more

A wonderful, funny and accurate insight into Croatian culture and customs. There are so many things I, as a Croatian, grew up with and consider perfectly normal, but are pointed out as unusual and something a foreigner must adapt to in this book. I laughed through most of it and enjoyed the way things are presented and described. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone with a couple of hours of spare time.

Awesome! I laughed my ass off! And it made me feel good about being Croatian, after a while. Everyone should read this, Croatian people who need a remider that it isn't everything awful and wrong being us. And as for the others, I'll give this book as a DAR :))) to everyone, anywhere I travel, in case I fail to explain what Croatia and it's life means. Great job, hrvatski zete :)

As an Irishman with a Croatian girlfriend, I found the title of this book very compelling.
Also it came with a recommendation from my Croatian friends.
The first half of the book was very fast paced, humorous and informative.
Unfortunately the second half wasn't as compelling.
Still a very good read, and would recommend it to anyone dating a Croatian girl! ;)

Okay, I know I say this very often: but I love this book.
The way author, born American, described cultural conflicts and the way we live here in Croatia is wonderful.
When I first heard of this book, I was sceptical. Mostly because I know how books about/where things happen in Croatia turn out to be.
Boy, was I wrong.

After consnatntly listening to other people saying it's great, and being bombed with it by publisher, I decided to look at Cody's blog - ZABLOGREB - before actually reading "Propuh, p

Kinda cute, but it got boring after his initial culture shock wore off. At times I felt like he was reeeally reaching in his comparisons between Croatia and the US.

The author can't tell a funny story or explain s concept without beating into the ground like a proverbial dead horse. There is a surprising amount of grammar and spelling mistakes as well.
