This is actually a re-read as I just acquired the 4th and 5th volumes of the series. Gunslinger Girl is definitely a cut above the average manga, perhaps because manga is its original format as opposed to being an adaptation. This first volume is mostly an introduction to the premise of the series - a new covert organization in Italy has been created which pairs handlers with adolescent girls who are part human, part cybernetic. Most of the girls come from tragic circumstances and the installati...more

This is one of those series I feel bad loving as much as I do. On the surface, the story is very clear and easy to dismiss if one chooses to. It's about an agency that takes young girls (from 10 to 14, 16 at the oldest later on) and turns them into cyborgs who then learn how to fight like soldiers.

It's a little twisted, but it's right up my alley. Each girl has a sad story to tell. These girls were not normal little girls pulled off the street. The one we meet at the beginning, Henrietta, is the...more
This manga series and the anime series of the same name are based on one of the saddest and creepiest premises of all time. Basically, young girls get the "Six Million Dollar Man" treatment to save their lives, with a simple proviso: these lives now belong to the state. They are trained as young cyborg assassins, supposedly targeting terrorists but in fact going after whoever the politicians in power want removed.
While the manga is good, the anime is even better, because of its excellent soundtr...more
Nothing better than kick ass child assassins lol jk but gunslinger girl has a lot of action and it's very violent but it has a good story line
I've taken a minor break from my normal pattern of a-book-a-day. what's happened is that a bunch of europeans have moved into my recent living environment, and although I'll be returning to a less connected situation very shortly, in the meantime, its proven irresistible singing Wacht-am-Rhein to the Frankfurters and the Marseille to the Frenchie. I even learned some Swedish. Hey! (Swedish for hello). Bra! (Swedish for 'good'). Now you know how to survive in the most positive of the depressed Sc...more

Gunslinger girl is about a girl name Henrietta who witness her whole family murdered then when she awakes inside the The Social Welfare Agency. Where they brainwash and repair her injuries to become a lean mean fighting killing machine. In this volume Henrietta is in the Agency with a girl name Elsa who falls in love with Signore Lauro. Now to the Agency belief because he wouldn't love her back she killed him and herself. But this book was very lengthy lol and interestin...more

It's a slightly fetishistic tale (young girls with guns and the older handlers who they love) but surprisingly there is very little fanservice (unexpected when this type of story is handled).

Oddly enough, they chose Italy for this, but I guess the writer took his cues from Hitman, who also was a young, damaged boy taken in by an Italian anti-terrorist organization that trains children to be super assassins. It's a little too close for comfort but not uncomfortably plageristic.

i tried but it turns out i cant read action mangas

A tragedy in the original sense of the word. A story of devotion to the death, regardless of the fact that it's to someone who hardly deserves it, and of refusing to find yourself for the sake of the person you love. It's a portrayal of ultimate sacrifice--not of dying, which is easy in the end, but of giving your entire life as a tool and a bauble to the person who you admire. Uncomfortable and fascinating.

This is probably the only series worth reading in the "little girls with big guns" sub-genre. It replaces the typical action-adventure and fanservice with a moving storyline and very sympathetic characters. I wish it had been licensed by a company that was more diligent in getting new volumes released without a year or more between them.

Manga which made me loves Italy and keep browse every single thing about that country. The setting was pictured so real, made us wondering whether that place is really exist--which is actually yes. Footnotes on dates, important people, and places can be found everywhere, and it just make me want to search about the history more.
I personally liked it a lot and I hope to read more. I'm currently finishing volume 8 of this series and I believe it's one of my manga series that's deserves my "I like these books a lot" shelf. Yes I'm strange and have those kinds of bookshelves, but then again...

very poignant story. japanese manga at its best merely provides a backdrop to discuss human suffering and redemption or provides a fun romp through imaginary worlds. this series is the former.

This story was just not my style. It was too action-heavy and serious for me to get into. If you like cyborgs with guns, have at it, though.

Even though it might be great for some people, I didn't think it was too. It didn't really get my interest that much.
You see, I always like perfect soldier stories whether they are male or female. And oh, tragedy!

This is a gruesome book! Just what I needed! LOVE IT! I look forward to reading all of the series!
It was okay, but probably not a series that I would want to continue with.
