This was such an odd book. It started off with sound principles. Avoid processed food, focus on plants, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats etc. But then she slowly transitions into a diet where you are primarily eating nothing but juice. She is also somewhat obsessed with poo. She recommends monthly colonic cleansings, self administered enemas, and even pooing in your trash can as opposed to your toilet. The main principle of her philosophy is too get everything in and out as fast ...more
This is the best raw food book I have read so far. Rose provides a moderate, realistic and simplistic approach to embarking on a raw food diet. I especially enjoyed her emphasis on food combining, which is infinitely beneficial for those interested in weight loss and true detoxification. Unlike a lot of raw food proponents, Rose stresses the value of a slow transition into raw foods to avoid autointoxication. After all the reading I have done on this subject, this book really helped me to co...more
Wow! Even if you are not interested in the raw foods movement, you are guaranteed to learn a lot about how your body processes food - and why even low-fat foods create tremendous waste (and therefore weight) in your body.
Simply put, the human digestive system does not recognize cooked or processed foods. This creates waste, which adds weight--even if you are thin right now.

I have been interested in the raw food diet/lifestyle for years, but have not had enough confidence in myself to really take the next step. Over the weekend I finally decided to buy this book which I've had my eye on it for several months now. I read the entire thing in under 24 hours and I have learned a lot!
Whenever I tell anyone that I read this book or that I'm on a "raw food diet," everyone seems to react with some sort of fear. They tell me stories about people they ...more

Recommends it for:
Anyone concerned with their health and wanting to feel better
I really learned a lot from this book. It is easy to understand and there are a lot of great points for great health.
There is a great survey to see where you are really at, and gives guidance on your transition process.
It is a great book for anyone who wants to improve their health, get off of nuisance medications, and feel better.
I thoroughly enjoy this book-- I finally moved it over to my read bookshelf, though I constantly refer to it.

From this book I learned, or really reencountered, the idea that middle age weight gain might not be from a slowing metabolism. It might be from enzyme depletion. Eat raw foods and drink fresh pressed juices to replenish your enzymes. As a beginner I like this book better than Life Force Energy one she wrote because it has different stages/levels and you can start off slowly.
I love this book and I really hope I can incoporate more of this approach to eating in mine and my family's lives. The american diet is DISGUSTING and though I feel like generally we eat better than average this book made me feel like I could do a way better job...and now I know how!
One thing I like is it is not all or nothing. You can be whatever percent of a raw foodist as you wish and you can ease into it. It is SO different from the typical American diet that it is stressful to ...more

Rose offers a simple, real world approach to people interested in raw foodism at any level. Compared to other live food literature I´ve read, i got a lot of motivation from her positive and upbeat tone and realistic applications.
Brilliant for what I was looking for - a bit of a food plan to follow to help me feel more energized. I love the idea of 'eat raw until dinner' as well learning about food combining and quick exit foods. Day 4 so far - and feeling fairly good. I admit to being horrified to learn so much about the bowels and how long food can stay there... but I really appreciated her systemic look at it. There is a level for everyone. And a lot of flexibility. And a lot of dark chocolate.. Have tried two of the ...more

extremely informative in finding alternative and healthier yet delicious recipes!
This book has good info on what foods to eat vs not to eat. However I'm a bit skeptical about the theory that there are four food groups and you should never eat foods from different groups at the same time, with some exceptions. Eating fruit by itself makes sense, but is the human digestive system really so temperamental and fragile that I can't eat meat and potatoes or eggs and toast at the same time? The book had a lot of recipe suggestions which were great, but I'm just not the type that's c...more
I think of all the books I have read this has the best approach to healthy eating. It is simple and straight forward. At first I thought the idea of food combining was a bit excessive. But I tried it and I felt so much better. Its amazing. The book helps you transition to eating more raw food starting from where ever you are, and gives good advice to assist you in progressing as far as you would like to. It also has a lot of good recipies in it as well. I keep this book on my kitchen counter I u...more
This book was the first I'd read on Raw Food. I'm interested in health and nutrition and read a variety of books in that area. This book was well written, explaining the pros of raw food. As any diet book, it has menus and ideas, but this book has several stages to 'ease' you onto raw foods. I like how the health benefits are tied into how your body works. I've bought this book for others, and shared my copy of the book with friends. It even inspired me to go out and get a juicer, something I've...more
This book was easier to read than most raw food books. Natalia Rose recommends a gradual transition to a raw diet, incorporating some cooked foods for a while as you transition. She recommends that people stay at a moderate raw diet for years, even, as their bodies and their lifestyles get used to the raw foods. She suggests a 5 stage plan to achieving a raw diet, and mentions that there is room for the occasional, special cooked meal even for a "level 1" raw foodist.

For the most part I agree with this book. I'd say I agree with about 85% of it.
Ideally I'd love to eat raw 100% of the time but it's tough.
The author understands this and gives you various options for eating raw at your own pace.
Rose really comes down hard on soy, and from all that I've read the jury is split on this subject...so take it with a grain of salt (pun intended)
I am glad that she talks in length about how horrible any form of dairy is but then she still advocat...more

The concept of food combining was new to me and it got me thinking. This book is inspiring as a beginner to eating raw but this book alone is insufficient to build up a "diet" by which I mean a new lifestyle. Nonetheless, it has good information and I especially liked that it introduced me to food combining. My next read will be about the hay dieting for sure.
Although it sounds extreme, this book describes a very reasonable and rational diet that actually worked (I lost 10 lbs)!!! But after you quit the diet, its definitely hard to go back on it (in which, I found all 10 lbs again). Great to perform after the holidays/before spring break/summer. I recommend only to those who seriously love veggies and it may be hard for some people to give meat.
I like that she is pretty balanced with expectations of slowly moving all-raw or helping the reader to find their own proper level of how much raw food to eat. For example, for most people she says to see if you can go raw until dinner. She also gives good ideas for how to find food you CAN eat at restaurants or at gatherings with family and friends, rather than just fasting like other raw foodists often suggest. Overall, I've gotten some great ideas and some great recipes.

Not interested in losing weight, but would love to learn more about the optimal ways of preparing and consuming food. On a quick stopover in Boston a few weeks ago I saw my cousin, Diem, who is a RN. She looked SO well and vibrant in every way. She was the one who recommended this book to me.
I was curious about raw foods, and Natalia gives perfect reason as to why one would follow this path, what the effects are on your body, and how to eat. Even if you're not into raw foods, it really hits home on why you should at least include more veggies into your diet and less processed foods!
Well, I should have paid closer attention to the use of the word "Diet" when I picked up this book. I bought the book to gain information about a regular raw food protocol. The book is a weight-loss regimen using raw food diet as its utlimate goal. It contains some good information and some good recipes, but it isn't the information that I was seeking. The charts in it are good for understanding the effect of different foods; in other words, which is worse for us pasteurized dairy food...more
Interesting look at the raw foods diet. I appreciated that she offers various starting points depending on your current diet and lifestyle and that she doesn't push for everyone to go 100% raw. Way more info about colonics and enemas than I really wanted to know, though.
I was interested in the author's 5 step plan so I read this book. It is good advice but I do not think I could ever follow an entire raw food diet. If you really want to go back to earing very basic foods and use colonics, this is the book for you. :)
This is a good book if you are looking to change your diet and ease into eating more raw veggies. Some of the science feels a bit weak but really how wrong can you go eating a high plant diet?
Easy read and decent recipes.
Easy read and decent recipes.
This is a great book for anyone who wants to understand how the human body uses food. Don't worry...it's not as the title suggests...only RAW FOOD. That's just one way...After eating this way for a while, I felt really great!!
Best book on raw food I have read to date. Natalia Rose makes switching to a raw food diet fully accessable to everyone and has good reasoning as to why to eat more consciously and how to eat more concsiously.
This is a great intro to eating raw. Some of the food combining advice is pretty unrealistic, but it is a good source for information on why raw food is important and general detox.
This is a pretty great book if you are a health freak like me. Totally agree with the majority of her whole philosophy. It is a bit extreme but some of the recipes are pretty great.
It was refreshing to see a raw food book without dehydration, sprouting, soaking, etc. Natalia makes this an easy way to live.
