Pretty darn good. Very dark, of course. LOTS of surprises. I did have to review the last season of the TV show in wikipedia to remember just how they all ended up in that alley. Some very nice things are included with this hardback volume: there is a nifty gallery by various artists at the back and a cool section with author's notes. A funny item is on the very last page where the author and artist have their bios, Joss Whendon is listed as "The Watcher."

I really love the vibe this comic has, that Lynch, with Joss' help, really gets the voice of the show and the characters. Pretty much everything here feels like what would have happened in a season 6 (except dragon riding) if they could have gotten all the actors back. I'm not in love with the art, but it works as far as representing the characters, even if the panel progressions are odd and the big fight scenes a bit dark and infusing. My favorite part is that, at least so far, I don't think an...more

Joss Whedon has done quite well with the eighth season of Buffy as a comic, and now he is exploring the next season of Angel. At the conclusion of the series, Angel and his friends were left with all of Los Angeles being taken over by the forces of Hell. Demons and monsters have divided the city into wards, with a single warlord in charge of each sector.

Angel is no longer a vampire while Gunn has become one. Wesley is the spiritual connection to the senior partners at Wolfram & Hart. Connor...more

Though I didn't love the art (often the drawings of main characters don't look enough like their real-life counterparts), this was a stronger 'next season via comic book' than the start of Buffy Season 8. Like in Buffy Season 8, the setting has taken some big turns, but it felt more in keeping with the feel of Angel than the 'now we're superheroes with tons of expensive technology' turn of Buffy Season 8.

The first several chapters seem low on the trademark Whedon wit, but the plot is solid. Cha...more

Having last seen these characters bravely facing the armies of Hell with weapons and quips, this canon continuation initially felt unnecessary. One needn't have worried, as Joss Whedon continues to use the comic medium to write love letters to his TV characters. With the whole of Los Angeles sucked into Hell, the former Team Angel is scattered. Spike lives like Hugh Hefner among a gaggles of female warriors, while keeping an eye on the temporally shifting Illyria. Lorne has become the ruler of S...more

A million years ago, before I got banned from TelevisionWithoutPity.com, I opined, in the wake of Not Fade Away, that the Senior Partners were unlikely to unleash a demon war on LA. Seems I was wrong. Not only did the Senior Partners unleash a demon war on LA, they took the whole city to hell. Feudalism settles on the sprawling city, and the Lords of Down Town Los Angeles, Compton, Burbank, Sherman Oaks, etc. (though not the Lords of Beverly Hills and Silver Lake, for Lorne-and-Spike related rea...more

While I was watching Angel (the TV show--I don't "watch" books unless I think they're up to no good), I enjoyed it but thought I liked Buffy more (which I'd watched in its entirety before switching to Angel). But after Angel was over and done with, I found myself thinking about it a lot more than Buffy. I think I may have preferred Angel.

Pretty sure I'm going to prefer his comic, too.

I think that Angel's storyline is probably better suited for comics than Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season Eight w...more

Reason for Reading: I love "Angel" to the nth degree!

Comments: I usually start my reviews with a brief summary but I can't with this book which picks up some time after the fight at the end of Season 5 of the television series Angel. The show ended with the end of the world and "the gang" taking on an epic battle against a horde of demons, including a dragon, which the viewer would assume continued until the bitter end. Well things are not exactly as they seem and the first five comics gathered...more

After watching the series finale of Angel, I was left with a lot of questions. I felt like they left me hanging, and I wanted some answers! Thankfully, Joss Whedon was kind enough to give me some of those answers by continuing the series in graphic novel form.

The artwork in this book is, I think, impressive, simply because it was a very easy transition to go from live actors on film to drawn characters on paper. The characters are drawn well enough that I knew who each was upon seeing them, just...more

The Angel TV show had what for me is the best final episode of a TV show I've ever seen. That's all relative, naturally, but it ultimately left me with the perfect balance of awe, emotional effect and a longing for more.

Enter Angel: After the Fall, Volume 1, which has the tough task of moving the universe forward. It does very well at that.

The storyline itself is what you would want as a fan. Apocalyptic LA, and we get the gang back. Angel, Gunn, Spike, Wesley, Illyria, Connor, Lorne and even th...more

It's no secret that the final season of "Angel" was rushed because of the network's decision to drop the show. So I was anxious to see where the story was going to go if Whedon had the time. I'm not convinced this is it.

Picking up a few months after the climactic battle against the hordes of hell that Wolfram and Hart unleashed in the series finale, Angel continues his struggles from within the belly of the beast but L.A. itself has gone to Hell - literally. Demons control the city, humanity has...more

I loved the continuation of Buffy as a comic so I was excited about Angel since season 5 was my favorite and I always wondered what happened next. I thought this would pick up right where the TV series ended but instead it was months later. I found that disappointing. What they've done with characters I love was shocking and not in a good way. No longer Team Angel now that LA is hell on Earth, Wes is a ghost who works for Evil, Inc., Gunn's a vamp, Angel's human and Connor and Spike are the big...more

Meh!! I was so excited to see what happened after the final scene of Angel S05... and was not satisfied by this continuation at all. The art was way too computerized, lacked detail, and I found it kinda hard to tell who was who. I also took issue with the portrayal of women; big breasted, barely clothed, and very much in typical 'comic book' fashion which has not been the case in Whedon comics up to this point (and is part of the reason why I appreciate the comic continuations; they appeal to me...more

On its own, this wasn't at all bad, if at times a little sloppily constructed. There's actually an interesting story here, with some weird and humorous moments, and I could see this being an intriguing continuing series if the writing and pacing were tightened a little.

As a continuation of Angel, however...well, I much prefer where the television series left off, in that wonderful, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid-like finale. As a sixth season, this just fails to work, always feels slightly...more

It's very rare that I delve into the field of graphic novels and I only actually own two of them...one of which is 'Angel: After the Fall'. I can't say I was ever a fan of Angel when it was on television as the main character of Angel was just too bland for my liking...I'll blame that on the white Tiger Woods known as David Boreanaz. Never cared too much for Buffy either even though my college friends all used to think Sara Michelle Gellar was the hottest thing on two legs. I always thought Char...more

It's hard to imagine a tougher job than picking up a beloved franchise from an open ending, and bringing something new to the table. This book marks the beginning of what is basically a perfect season 6 of the show.

Brian Lynch brings everything to the table. We meet our characters gradually, the destroyed city, and the mix of revelation and humour is constant, dark, and perfect. The writing is spot on, for everyone.

The art is also gorgeous, mostly. The book isn't perfect, neither is the art, an...more

I, like another reviewer here, was VERY eager to see what happened. I loved the show and recently watched my entire Angel: The Complete Series DVD boxed set so it renewed my interest in what happened after the last shot.

And while it was interesting, it was just a little....off for me. There was a little bit of the typical Joss humor in there, but not enough. Some characters seemed odd or slightly wrong. And I wasn't a big fan of the style of art. (It shouldn't be hard to determine who someone is...more

This is the canonical follow-up to the Angel series, but kicks in a few months after the major events of the series finale. I wouldn't have been so disappointed with this if it were more clear as to what was going on with the different characters, rather than the slap-dash and somewhat confusing way their situations were put together for the reader. If things had been more cohesive, I think the in media res approach would have worked, but instead it was just awkward and confusing. Pair that with...more

I bought this book.

Buffy took season eight to the pages of the comic book world and now Angel's done the same. The pluses—well lets face it both Angel and Spike have faces made for being drawn.

In the last televised episode of Angel the broody vampire with a soul managed to kill the inner circle of demons at the earthly head of Wolfram & Hart (a demonic law firm, as in made up of demons, run by demons and specializing in demon/supernatural based dealings) and to put it mildly the senior par...more

I decided to read the comics after finishing both the Buffy and Angel TV series. I started with this volume because after the series finale of Angel, how could you not want to know what happened? I am a comic book noob, so the medium is taking a little bit for me to get used to. I tend to get confused a little between some of the panels, so hopefully once I've read a few more issues I'll be able to rate this higher.

Story wise, the comics take place a few months after the end of the series. The...more

Whedon fans will love it (otherwise, leave it).

Pretty much the only point to this is to figure out what finds out after the final season of Angel. I loved getting to see what happened to the characters after the end of the television series, but the comics move super slow. I’ll collect them all over time, but it’s hard for me to justify $15.00 on something that takes me less than an hour to read from cover to cover. Also, I don’t love the artwork (I’m not a fan of Franco Urru, who is the comic b...more

This is a graphic novel that continues the television series in print. The series lasted 5 seasons on TV and I was a big fan. So when season 6 came out in this format, I had to get it and read it to find out what happened with the crazy ending that left all the fans up in the air. What we found out was that the apocalypse only effected L.A. and there was some sort of dimension rip. Also, the lives of our heroes has taken a very different spin than what you'd think. The next graphic novel is out...more

If, like me you hated the end of the Angel TV series, screaming at the TV, cursing Joss Weedon for ending the series with such a cliff hanger, knowing there would not be any more episodes. Fear not, Joss Weedon & Brian Lynch have got together and continued the series, but in Comic/Graphic Novel form. Like the series, it's great, well written, and full of cliff hangers at the end of each issue. All the gang are there, Angel, Spike, Lorne, Gun, Wes, Connor, Illyria and Gru, and a whole host of...more

After the big reveal concerning Twilight in the Buffy books, I decided I must STOP, go back, and read the four-volume arc (which I had never even started) concerning the events following the end of the TV show. This rules. Brian Lynch delivers a convincing representation of the original characters. Their language is right, their attitudes are the perfect mix of funny and dramatic - it's just everything the show was, just as a comic book. I've been told that the end of the arc is kind of disappoi...more

I have to say, this was bloody awesome! The style was there, the characters, the vibe, it all felt like Angel. Season eight of Buffy feels a bit 'out there' as far as the plot goes but this actually is a continuation of the series, and even though it didn't start right where the show (and action) left off (although, I think volume two of After the Fall does), it did a great job getting back into a groove. Not to mention the artwork is fabulous and the whole look of the book is beautiful. Great j...more

I am not going to give even a summary of anything that happens in this graphic novel because I can't think of anything to say that wouldn't be a spoiler. It is generally revealed what happened to pretty much everyone since the final episode of Angel: The Series television show. It is also more awesome than everything.
The dialogue is spot-on, the graphic renditions of the characters are much more realistic and identifiable than those in the first issue of Buffy Season 8, there are many interestin...more

Angel is back! Following on from the teasing, frustrating end of Season 5 where all our characters’ lives are in the balance (except for poor old Wesley), we open with Los Angeles having been plunged into Hell by the Senior Partners as penalty for Angel & Co’s murder of the Circle of the Black Thorn.

This is a solid story with strong dialogue—Lynch is excellent at nailing the character’s voices. There are enough twists and turns to keep fans on the edge of their seats, but non-fans of the sho...more
