This book is worthy of the attention of anyone who has the ability to see humor in their own stubbed toes.

I read this book as I was in between reads of other books. Its not a novel, but reading it in sequence is very entertaining. While i don't believe many will argue it has much of an uplifting substance, I often return to it for my own enjoyment, or for a short humorous read with friends and/or family.

The collection of random short stories, bits of commentary, and creative essays on un...more

HOLY SHIT!

Funny. Very funny. And a brilliant mix of humor ranging in topic and style. Truly a collection of the very best.

As for some of the essays, I want to immediatley clarify that what some may mistake for pretentiousness is actually the opposite: very educated people making fun of the things they're known for taking too seriously. There is great social commentary resting beneath the hillarity of these essays and if future generations care to look, they will use this book to obse...more

I am shocked that there are people in this world with the ability to craft such brilliant farce. This book is perfect to pick up and put down because it is a collection of short essays, but it is hard not to move on to the next chapter when you finish wiping the tear of laughter from your eyes! Perhaps the best "essay" is the "Unused Audio Commentary by Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky, Recorded Summer 2002, for the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring DVD (Platinum Series Exte...more

This is just a fun collection of short, humorous writings by a multitude of authors. Anyone familiar with Dave Eggers and his workshop should know what to expect. I'm particularly fond of two pieces in this collection:

1: Unused Audio Commentary by Howard Zinn & Noam Chomsky, Recorded Summer 2002, for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring DVD (Platinum Series Extended Edition), Part One

2: No Justice, No Foul in which land mark Supreme Court cases were actually decided ...more

"The unused audio commentary by Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky, Recorded Summer 2002, For the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring DVD (Platinum Series Extended Edition), Part One." That among other pieces make this collection one of the funniest things political nerds like me have ever read. I don't think most things are funny. I don't care for Will Ferral or Christopher Guest movies. This is the kind of stuff that actually makes me laugh out loud.

SO far, this is a funny book. Melissa and I had fun last Friday drinking these mint tea, myer lemon, and vodka drinks and reading the list section. I had been reading it earlier in the day and I had a few parts that I was really excited to share. You should read it and start laughing at the funny parts.

One of my best buddies gave me this book. 1 star for sentimental attachment. Contained within, there's an argument against having a trash compactor on the Death Star, and a Zinn/Chomsky commentary of the Lord of the Rings. 2 stars for comedy and wit. All in all, I liked it just fine.

My husband received this book as a Christmas gift and he keeps reading me little tidbits of it when he finds something that makes him laugh. I tend to like the lists in the back the best, though I also did really love the piece that consisted of a series of letters from a charity.

Overall, a great book. Individually, some of the stories are kind of funny and others are really funny, but they all appeal to that same McSweeney's brand of humor -- sort of dry, sort of silly, sort of simple, but very humorous. The lists were my favorite part.

Clever, gave me the occasional hoot (though not as many as I would have expected. Maybe I don't have much of a sense of humor anymore?) My favorites: Ezra Pound and the Lord of the Rings DVD commentary by Noam Chomsky.

Hilarious! My favorites where the itemized list of all the things wrong with the idea of the Death Star trash compactor and the diary of a COBRA recruit. Just about the perfect bathroom reading.

This book is so great. I read little snippets from it all the time when I first came across it. Every piece is perfectly selected and really well written and delivered and communicated.

i actually was pretty disappointed with this collection. too often, it seemed, eggers chose stories that tried too hard to be funny. not the best offering from mcsweeneys in my opinion.

Some real funny stuff, some almost funny stuff, some great lists. I probably would have given it 4 stars except McSweeney's never accepted any of my lists, and they were brilliant.

short stories are my favorite things to read. I also like how the McSweeneys come in the mail and are different everytime. It's ten times better than a magazine subscription.

Hilarious. Some parts get a little too pomo, but still entertaining for the most part. Since it's about 1000 short, funny pieces, it works great for bathroom reading.

I had some really good laughs with this book and annoyed a lot of my friends by constantly calling them and reading aloud parts of the book. I enjoyed the lists most.

This is a good little collection of shorts taken from the McSweeney's website. It's no must-read, but certainly a good table companion for those who enjoy the niche.
