I’ve always been interested in books about the ocean liner Titanic. Even if the book is geared toward children ages four to eight. In Marty Crisp’s new book, Titanicat, I learned new trivia about the ship.
This time about the ship’s cat, known as 4-0-1. Shipping lore says that it’s unlucky to call a ship by its name while it is under construction. The numbers 4-0-1 was the number of the ship and therefore the name of the cat cabin boy Jim Mulholland gives the tortoiseshell cat that accompanies h...more

This book was fascinating and adventurous. I believe that since its pages are full of words but also great pictures this book I'd recommend it to a 3rd to 5th grade student.
Students in the grades 3rd-5th grade will really enjoy the storyline the most because it’s adventurous and really interesting to put such a story to such a horrifying event. The second parts I think students will enjoy are the great pictures. It looks like the pictures are from water color or paints, but some of the pictures...more

I picked this book up at a Scholastic book fair that was held at the school on the campus of the hospital where I work. I like cats, and I like learning about the Titanic, and the book was only $2.50, so I thought, why not?

Audience: This book would be good for students in 3rd or 4th grade. Possibly higher level 2nd graders.
Appeal: This book has great illustrations that are very detailed. The kittens look almost real and super cute. Jim is a very cute boy that kids will love to relate to.
Application: I would use this book in a history lesson about famous events. This book would be great for a mini lesson on the Titanic. I would use a picture walk pre-reading strategy first and then read the book to the students. I...more

Written by Marty Crisp, Illustrated by Robert Papp, 2008. This story is based on factual account from an interview with a reporter who talked with a man who claims to have been in charge of the Titanic's ship cat who took her kitten off the boat at a port before it was to sail. The man was superstitious and got off following the cat. He later was saved from the death of the rest of the crew on the ship. The story is based on primary sources and survivors accounts of the historical ship & cre...more
Jim Mulholland is excited to be a part of the Titanic’s crew and it’s maiden voyage, even if he is just a cabin boy. Even if part of his duties include taking care of the ships cat. Jim doesn’t mind, he is sure that the cat is lucky and names her after the ships number 4-0-1. He believes 4-0-1 is his lucky charm and is thrilled when she delivers a litter of kittens. But just before the Titanic sets sail, Jim can’t find 4-0-1. Can he set off without his lucky cat?

Titanicat took place, obviously, on the Titanic. It was about a boy, Jim, who was a worker on the ship before it took sail. He found a mother cat and all her babies on the ship and said that was going to bring them luck on their voyage. But, right before the ship left dock, the cat was taking her babies off the ship and when Jim went to go get them, the ship left without them all. Days later he heard about the sinking and realized the cat actually saved him - that was her good luck. I thought th...more

This is an interesting story about a boy named Jim and the cat aboard the Titanic. The cat had four kittens and when the ship docked for passengers, she took three of the off of the boat. Jim knew she would come for the fourth, so he took the fourth off of the boat. The boat set sail before he could get back on. He had taken care of the cat and her kittens while on board and he would continue to take care of them. Later, he discovered the tragedy of what had happened to Titanic. The cat knew wha...more

This book is about a cat that lived on the Titanic before it set sail and sunk. The cat, 409, had kittens and one of the deck hands was put in charge of keeping track of her and her kittens. She carries her kittens off the ship one at a time right before it sail, but she forgets one and the deck hand jumps off to return her kitten to her. He misses the boat and later hears that it has sank. He and the cat and her kittens all live happily ever after.

Audience: This book is for primary elementary students. Because of information about the Titanic and a lesson on the luck cats may bring, I think it best fits with 2nd to 3rd grade.
Appeal: I think it would appeal to 2nd and 3 graders because of its lesson on the famous ship, Titanic. It also expresses a warm hearted story about the ship’s cat, which brings the cabin boy, Jim some luck that could save his life.

At first when I read that this was based on a true event, I thought, oh no, don't tell me that a cat died on the Titanic!
But no, this is about the ship's cat and the Irish cabin boy who was in charge of looking after her. I do think cats sense danger, even if it's remote, so the story makes sense to me. The illustrations of the cat and her 4 kittens were SO cute, but the illustrator got mixed-up on the colors of the kittens. In the first picture of them, there's one calico, one black, and one th...more

Based on the true story of a cabin boy who escaped the sinking of the Titanic thanks to the ship's lucky cat, Titanicat reimagines the details of the story using historical facts such as diaries, interviews with survivors, and models of the ship itself.

Titanicat is the story of young Jim who works on the Titanic, preparing it for its voyage. Onboard he finds a cat, who births a litter of kittens. On the day the Titanic is set to sail, the cat carries its litter offboard but forgets one. Jim decides to reunite the kitten and cat, thus missing the tragic sinking of the Titanic. This book was kind of boring for me. The illustrations were beautiful, but the story didn't hold my attention; I don't think students would enjoy it either.
Audience: Fourth- Eighth graders. This book can be used when teaching history because its based off of the incident with the Titanic. You can also teach about cultures and superstisions.
Appeal: For the students who like learning about disasters this book is a story with in the story of the diaster of the Titanic. I found it to be an interesting book because I learned about the superstision that people had back then as to why the disaster happened.
Golden Sower Winner 2010-2011

marked it as to-read
I just got to preview this book but the illustrations alone were amazing! Students will be drawn to this book (really anything with the word Titanic in the title!) Library Journals LLC says: "The picture-book format works well for this brief episode in the disaster. Reluctant readers will be able to read this amazing tale on their own, while listeners with a taste for longer read-alouds will enjoy hearing it."
This book is a Golden Sower 2011 Primary Winner. The audience for this book is young children, especially animal lovers. We always hear stories about how animals save human's lives. We also hear stories about how animals sometimes know when natural disasters are coming. This book shows the intelligence of one cat and the bravery of one boy. It's kind of slow paced for a young child I believe, but the message still gets across.
Titanicat is about the cat who supposedly lived on Titanic with her kittens but jumped off before the ship left the dock. A young boy realized she left a kitten behind and saved the kitten but the boat took off without him. He then realized that the cat saved his life because Titanic hit an iceberg and sank in the ocean. I would use this book to discuss Titanic or features that can be found in the ocean.
I think I vaguely remembering learning--among all the many Titanic books I have read--about a cat having kittens aboard Titanic. But I did not really know the story, and I'm not sure how much of this story is fact and how much is imagined. Either way, it is based on others' accounts of seeing cats aboard during trials and leaving before the voyage began. And the illustrations are beautiful.
Audience: This would be a great book to use for K-3rd grade. It would be an interesting way to teach about the Titanic.
Appeal: This book could be used to tie into history relating to the titanic. It makes the story of the titanic a little less depressing and easier for children to understand. Almost puts a happy spin on the titanic story.
Award's List: 2010-2011 Golden Sower Nominee

This book would target from 3rd to 6th grade children. This book, children could somewhat relate to by seeing or feeling something they know is going to go wrong and they stick with their gut instinct and steer away from possible danger. This could lead to a stranger danger talk to even a history lesson about the Titanic or ocean. Award Nominee/Winner 2010-2011
This is a great historical fiction book to use to talk about the tragedy of Titanic. what makes it so fun is that it takes place before the ship sets sail for the maiden voyage. Then, the cats cause the boy to leave the ship and miss the voyage. Then the book gives the perspective of the people finding about the terrible disaster. Excellent book.

Cute story about a boy who works on getting the Titanic ready before it's first voyage. He makes friends with a litter of cats and these cats ended up making sure that this boy wasn't on the Titanic when it set sail. The illistrations in this book were amazing and would be a good book to read to a classroom of children of any age.
I love anything Titanic related. This is a beautifully illustrated book that tells the story of the ship's cat who leaves the ship right before sailing. The boy assigned to take care of her follows her off and misses the sailing of the ship - and so attributes the cat to saving his life. The author's note in the back of the book recounts how he came to find this information out many years later.
audience:third through 5th graders. Students who have already learned about the ship Titanic's great tragedy. Also students who enjoy history and who enjoy learning new vocabulary.
appeal: a cat ends up saving a young boy's life by preventing him from boarding the ship.
