Set in the decade beginning in 1908, The Best Intentionsis, ultimately, a love story on many different levels: a man and woman in love; parents and children; and love as miracle, that love which is overriding and ,so often inexplicable.

Bergman was inspired to write this loosely biographical novel when he began rummaging through the voluminous family picture albums. That,

Ingmar Bergman was the greatest filmmaker of all time. This book is a strange hippogriff: part novel, part memoir, part play, part screenplay. But it works and is as powerful as one of his best films.

Shelves: marriage
Ingmar Bergman wrote the screenplay for a six-hour miniseries shown in Sweden about the imagined courtship of his parents. A three-hour abridgement was released in movie theaters across the world and shown on public TV in the United States. Don't read this fine translation hoping to find out what happened in the six-hour original because this book only contains the screenplay for the three-hour abridgement. If anyone knows how I can see the six-hour version with English subtitles, or read the fu ...more

This was the second book I read in Swedish. I watched the series by Bille August before, so I knew the story, which made it easier to read and also made me picture the characters as the actors looked like in the movie. Beautiful story, and beautiful writing; there were many words I didn't understand and had to look up, but I was happy to understand enough to be able to read it pleasantly. I think my next Swedish book will be Lanterna Magica, since I'm now acquainted with Bergman's writing.

What can be better than reading a Bergman movie?
Gotta love Mr Bergman. Is there anything this man can't do?
